Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Saturday made a sensational claim that most Hindu temples face demolition in states where the Bharatiya Janata Party is in power.
The remark came in a post by him on social media platform X over the Railway Ministry issuing a 'stay' on the demolition of the Hanuman Temple in Dadar East.
Uddhav posted, 'After Uddhav Thackeray ji exposed bjp’s electoral hindutva yesterday, today the @RailMinIndia official has issued a handwritten letter of "stay" to the demolition of the Hanuman Temple in Dadar East. This demolition order can't be only "stayed" but has to be withdrawn. The temple has been in its place for more than 80 years and the fact is, it is in bjp rules states that most Hindu temples face demolition. We will be visiting the temple for darshan at 5:30 pm, as planned."
The Railways had issued a notice to the trustee and pujari of an 80-year-old Hanuman Temple in Mumbai, calling it an "encroachment" on its land and ordering its removal within seven days.
The notice, dated December 4, stated that the temple structure was constructed without authorization on railway-owned land and was obstructing commuter movement, vehicular traffic, and infrastructure development at Dadar station.
The notice had drawn significant criticism and sparked a political controversy.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray criticized the BJP over the demolition notice, questioning its commitment to Hindutva.
"They are trying to demolish an 80-year-old temple. What Hindutva is this? The Centre and the state government are inactive over this," Thackeray said, taking a swipe at the BJP’s slogan "Ek Hai to Safe Hai."
The controversy has sparked a heated debate over the preservation of heritage structures and the BJP government’s policies. The Railways maintains that the temple is an unauthorized encroachment impeding critical infrastructure projects, while critics accuse the government of disregarding religious sentiments.
