Agartala: In a disturbing incident of mob violence and public humiliation, a woman was allegedly beaten up and forced to wear a garland of shoes by villagers in Tripura’s Dhalai district over her alleged involvement in an extramarital affair, police said on Sunday.

The incident occurred on Saturday morning at Harerkhola village under the jurisdiction of Kamalpur police station. Police said that the woman, a mother of two sons, was forcibly dragged out of her house by a group of villagers and assaulted in public.

The attackers also compelled her to wear a garland made of shoes, subjecting her to severe humiliation. Following information about the incident, a police team rushed to the spot and found the woman lying injured on the road.

“She was immediately rescued and taken to the district hospital in Ambassa, where she underwent a CT scan. Her condition is stable, and she is out of danger,” a senior police officer said.

Police have registered a case at Kamalpur police station against several individuals involved in the assault. One person has been arrested so far, and investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend others involved in the attack.

The incident has drawn strong condemnation from the Tripura Commission for Women (TCW). TCW chairperson Jharna Debbarma termed the act inhuman and unlawful, stressing that no individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands.

“We strongly condemn the torture and humiliation of the woman. Such acts cannot be justified under any circumstances. The police must take strict and lawful action against all those responsible,” Debbarma said.

She added that the Commission would send a team to Kamalpur on Monday to meet the victim and ensure that she receives justice and necessary support.
