Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee is unlikely to appear before the West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Monday, citing health-related issues, according to sources.

Banerjee, the party's national general secretary, had been summoned by the CID in connection with an investigation into the alleged use of forged signatures of TMC legislators in a communication submitted to the West Bengal Assembly Secretariat.

The notice, served personally at his residence on Kalighat Road on Saturday, directed him to appear at the CID headquarters in Bhabani Bhavan for questioning.

Sources indicated that Banerjee informed the investigating agency that he was unable to attend due to ongoing medical treatment at home. The health setback follows an incident on Saturday when he was reportedly attacked while visiting the residence of an alleged victim of post-poll violence in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas district.

Following the incident, Banerjee received treatment at two private hospitals amid dramatic scenes, with West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee present during the developments.

Reacting to reports of Banerjee's illness, BJP West Bengal president Samik Bhattacharya wished him a speedy recovery.

"I wish him a quick recovery and hope to see him back in the field soon," Bhattacharya told reporters.

The CID's investigation centres on allegations that forged signatures of party legislators were used in a letter submitted to the Assembly Secretariat endorsing Sovandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of the Opposition.
