A suspected bomb-making attempt on a Bhubaneswar rooftop ended in a deadly explosion, leaving two dead and two injured. CCTV footage of the Sundarpada blast has surfaced as police probe illegal explosives and possible criminal links.

What investigators suspect began as an illegal bomb-making activity on a rooftop in Bhubaneswar’s Airfield–Sundarpada area has now turned into a deadly case, with two people succumbing to injuries and chilling CCTV footage exposing the moment the explosion tore through the neighbourhood.
The January 27 blast occurred on the rooftop of a residential building, where police believe crude explosive devices were being assembled. A powerful burst of flames erupted behind rooftop water tanks, sending thick smoke into the air and triggering panic among nearby residents, many of whom rushed outdoors after hearing a deafening sound.
According to TOI, four people were critically injured in the explosion — Shahnawaz Malik (26), his mother Lizatun Bibi (51), his fiancée Truptimayee Mahal (23), and associate Amiya Mallick (27). Malik later died during treatment on February 4, while his mother succumbed to severe burns on February 10. The remaining two continue to receive medical care at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.
Investigators suspect illegal explosives on rooftop
According to police, preliminary findings indicate that one or more crude bombs may have exploded while being prepared.
Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Meena earlier stated that Malik had multiple criminal cases registered against him, including attempted murder and offences under the Arms Act. Investigators are probing whether the explosives were intended for criminal activity and if more individuals were involved.
High-intensity blast triggered wider probe
The scale of the explosion prompted bomb disposal squads, fire personnel and forensic teams to rush to the location soon after the incident. Authorities later initiated a deeper inquiry into the nature of the materials used.
