Delhi Police arrest five accused in the Vaibhav Gandhi murder case after a gunfire exchange; Bishnoi gang link under probe.

New Delhi: Delhi Police have made a significant breakthrough in the high-profile murder case of businessman Vaibhav Gandhi, arresting five accused linked to one of the capital’s most notorious organised crime syndicates.
The operation, involving an intelligence-led interception and a brief exchange of fire, marks a critical step in the investigation that has gripped the city since Gandhi was shot dead in broad daylight on February 9.
Gandhi, 35, a plastic granules manufacturer based in Sector 4 of the DSIIDC Industrial Area in Bawana, was ambushed near his factory at around 12.50 pm when assailants tried to seize his belongings.

Originally suspected to be a robbery, the case evolved into a complex criminal probe after police recovered nearly ₹1 crore in cash from his vehicle untouched by the attackers.
Encounter and Arrests
Acting on specific intelligence, a team of Delhi Police personnel tracked the movements of suspects believed to be involved in Gandhi’s killing.
When challenged by police, some accused allegedly opened fire, triggering a tactical response from the force. In the resulting gunfire exchange, one suspect was struck in the leg, and three others were overpowered during the operation.
Rohit Dodiya, DySP, said a white Skoda returning from the Junagadh Shivratri fair met with an accident on the Jetalsar overbridge around 6:30 am. He said three occupants died while one was referred to Junagadh, adding that overspeeding appears to be the cause.
Two additional suspects were arrested later, bringing the total to five. None of the officers was seriously injured, officials said.
The police have described the operation as a crucial “half-encounter” in their ongoing efforts to dismantle organised gangs operating in and around the capital. A pistol and live ammunition were reportedly recovered at the scene, further strengthening the case against the suspects.
Gang Links and Social Media Claim
Investigators have linked the arrested men to the infamous Lawrence Bishnoi criminal network, a group with a long history of extending its influence across northern India and implicated in high-profile crimes. One such example is the gang’s previously claimed involvement in other violent incidents, including past high-profile shootings and extortion cases.
A day after Gandhi’s murder, a social media post circulated claiming responsibility under aliases associated with the Bishnoi gang and other criminal groups such as the Jitender Gogi Maan, Hashim Baba, and Kala Rana gangs.
The post alleged that Gandhi had “interfered” in gang operations and suggested his killing was retaliatory. Police, however, say they are still verifying the authenticity of the account and its claims.
Motive: Robbery, Rivalry, or Mistaken Identity?
From the outset, the motive behind Gandhi’s killing puzzled authorities. Initial crime scene analysis suggested a robbery attempt, with assailants reportedly trying to snatch his laptop bag before shooting him at close range.
Days earlier, police noted the robbery theory was complicated after significant cash was found inside Gandhi’s car, untouched by the suspects.
Investigators are now exploring alternative angles, including gang rivalry and potential mistaken identity.
One theory posits that the attackers, possibly aiming for a different target associated with underground financial disputes, could have misidentified Gandhi as someone connected with hawala transactions or gang financing.
No conclusive evidence has yet emerged, and the motive remains a focal point of the inquiry.
Law Enforcement Response and Public Safety Concerns
Delhi Police have reassured citizens that the arrests demonstrate a proactive response to violent crime and organised gang networks.
Authorities say that continued investigations will aim to uncover any larger criminal conspiracies, accomplices, and the pathway that led to Gandhi’s killing.
Senior officials have committed to transparency and expedited legal processes, citing the gravity of a murder occurring in broad daylight in a busy industrial zone.
The Bawana murder has sparked widespread concern among local business communities and residents about security in industrial areas and the reach of gang syndicates in metropolitan regions. The arrests are viewed as a step toward restoring confidence, but many await deeper insights as the case proceeds to court and further forensic analysis unfolds.
