As Tamil Nadu gears up for the 234-member Assembly elections, concerns from the salt pans of Thoothukudi are coming into sharp focus, with workers calling for long-term social security and better medical support.

The salt pans, which provide livelihood to thousands of workers from Thoothukudi and nearby districts, are central to the region’s economy. However, those dependent on this labour-intensive sector say they continue to struggle with low wages, health risks, and inadequate welfare measures.

Workers highlight that prolonged exposure to saline water under harsh sunlight makes occupational hazards a daily reality. Skin ailments, dehydration, and other health complications are common, yet access to consistent and affordable medical care remains limited.

Their difficulties intensify during the monsoon season. With salt production coming to a complete halt due to rains, incomes dry up instantly, leaving families vulnerable. Many workers point out that existing welfare schemes and safety nets fall short during such periods of unemployment.

There is also a growing demand for structured and inclusive support systems that ensure income stability, healthcare access, and social security coverage throughout the year.

From the salt pans of Thoothukudi, the message ahead of the elections is clear — workers are seeking dignity, protection, and a more secure future.

Tamil Nadu will go to the polls in a single phase on April 23, with the results set to be announced on May 4.
