Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds on Sunday evening caused widespread damage to banana plantations in and around Thiruvaiyaru taluk of Thanjavur district, affecting the livelihoods of hundreds of farmers. According to local estimates, more than 30,000 banana plants were destroyed as the intense weather battered agricultural fields across the region.
Farmers expressed deep concern over the losses, stating that the damage came at a crucial stage of cultivation and could significantly impact their income. Sekar, a farmer from the affected area, said that his banana crop spread across six acres had been severely damaged by the heavy rain and gusty winds.

“I grow bananas on six acres. My crop has been destroyed in the heavy rain and strong winds,” he said.
The affected farmers are now urging the authorities to assess the extent of the damage and provide financial assistance. Sekar appealed to the government for compensation, saying that timely support would help farmers recover from the unexpected losses caused by the adverse weather conditions.
