Mystical beliefs put Owls at risk in Corbett Tiger reserve during Diwali
Corbett Tiger Reserve has intensified patrols as superstition-driven owl sacrifices during Diwali.
Corbett Tiger Reserve officials are on high alert as concerns rise over the targeting of owls for mystical practices. While the birds themselves pose no threat, human superstitions and ritualistic beliefs are putting them at risk.
Some people believe that sacrificing an owl during the Lakshmi Puja will bring wealth and prosperity, a myth that has led to incidents of smuggling and killing of these birds.
Sanjay Chhimwal, a nature lover, said, "It is very unfortunate that even today, people believe in tantra-mantra and mystical practices, which is causing the death of many animals, birds, and other living beings. During Diwali, it has been observed that some people use owls for performing Tantra Sadhana and sacrifice them to please Goddess Lakshmi. This is absolutely wrong because the owl is the vehicle of Goddess Lakshmi. In the eco cycle, it is an important bird that helps control the population of mice. I believe strict action should be taken if any such incidents come to light, although the administration does increase its surveillance during this time."
The authorities have intensified patrolling and are keeping a close watch across all vulnerable areas within the reserve.
Amit Gwasakoti, Sub-Divisional Officer of the Bijrani Zone, explained, "To ensure that no illegal intrusions occur in Corbett Tiger Reserve during Diwali, a high alert has been issued. Leave for the staff has been cancelled, and special patrols are being conducted along the southern boundary, where there is a risk of intrusions. Sniffer dogs, metal detectors, and searches are being conducted at railway stations, roads and areas where certain nomadic communities live. At the same time, special operations are being organised to catch people who, under blind faith, follow self-styled gurus, or engage in such activities."
The Corbett administration, in collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department, has urged the public to report any incidents of ‘owl poaching’ or wildlife-related crimes .
