A severe drinking water crisis has gripped Chowa village in Madhya Pradesh’s Mandla district, where residents are struggling daily to secure potable water amid drying wells and limited borewell access.

From early morning to late night, villagers gather around shrinking wells, waiting for their turn. In many cases, locals climb down into deep wells to collect water manually before containers are pulled back to the surface. The process remains dangerous, with risks of injuries, slippery conditions and encounters with snakes.

Residents say repeated appeals have been made to authorities seeking more wells and deeper borewells to ease the shortage. While local officials have reportedly initiated some measures, villagers claim progress has been slow.

The village sarpanch acknowledged that existing wells remain shallow and insufficient. Until long-term water solutions arrive, daily life in Chowa continues to revolve around the search for water.
