Villagers climb deep wells for muddy water in Gujarat’s Valsad
In Moti Palsan, a dangerous descent into deep, drying wells has become part of daily life as villagers struggle to access water during the harsh summer months. Nearly 1,200 residents of the hamlet rely heavily on these wells, where people climb down using ropes or ladders to collect a few pots of muddy water. Others wait above to pull the containers back up. Villagers say the process is slow and risky, often requiring hours of waiting for water to seep through the bottom of the wells.
The worsening crisis has renewed concerns over delays in the Astol drinking water supply scheme meant for remote villages in Kaprada and Dharampur talukas. Although pipelines and taps were installed, locals allege that a steady water supply never began. Officials blame a technical fault and say repairs are underway, while water tankers are being sent on alternate days until the system is restored.
