Puri witnessed a vibrant cultural start to December as the 36th Konark Festival and the 15th International Sand Art Festival opened at Chandrabhaga Beach. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi and Tourism Minister Pravati Parida jointly inaugurated the twin events, which celebrate the state’s rich artistic heritage.

The inaugural evening of the Konark Festival which was held on Monday, showcased classical dance performances by renowned artists from across India, set against the iconic backdrop of the UNESCO World Heritage Site,  the Sun Temple of Konark.

During the ceremony, Chief Minister Majhi highlighted the festival’s significance, saying, “36th edition of the Konark festival is starting today in Konark. The festival is a significant marker of Odisha's cultural identity, and also of several classical dances of our country – such as Odissi, Bharatanatyam, Kathakali, Manipuri, and Kathak – which are being presented here.”

Visitors from around the world attended the opening night and praised the grandeur of the event. Christian, a tourist from Germany, expressed his admiration:

"We are visiting India for the first time, and we are from Germany, and the Konark Festival 2025 is totally awesome, its gorgeous, beautiful. I love this culture."

Another German visitor, Marian, called the experience unforgettable, saying, "Oh my God, it's the most amazing, outstanding festival. I haven't seen something like this ever. It just feel so welcoming and I wish to come back here every year, its so amazing. All my friends are here, outstanding experience."

Running parallel to the dance festival, the International Sand Art Festival brought together leading sand artists from India and overseas. Intricate sculptures celebrating culture, traditions and creativity lined the beach, attracting large crowds.

Sand artist Jaismitha Malik shared her excitement about participating: "Today is the first day of the Sand Art festival and our theme for the first day is [centred around] our festival, culture and fair. Basically our work showcases the culture and festivals of Odisha. We are feeling great participating here on the first day."

Both festivals will continue through December 5, drawing thousands of visitors and offering a spectacular blend of dance, art and cultural expression along Odisha’s scenic coastline.
