Hundreds of villagers gather at TN's Karaikudi for a unique centuries-old fishing tradition
Hundreds joined the traditional fishing festival at Ilangudi Periya Kanmai near Karaikudi, celebrating heritage, unity and a successful community fish catch.
Hundreds of villagers from Karaikudi and nearby areas came together to celebrate the annual traditional fishing festival at Ilangudi Periya Kanmai in Tamil Nadu's Sivaganga district. The popular cultural event was held after the irrigation tank's water level receded during the summer, allowing residents to take part in the age-old community fishing tradition. Following a ceremonial flag-off by village elders, hundreds of participants entered the tank using hand nets, baskets, cloth nets and other traditional fishing tools. Men, women and children enthusiastically waded through the muddy tank bed, competing to catch fish such as catla, catfish, jalebi kendai and murrel. Many villagers proudly carried home large catches, turning the event into a celebration of both livelihood and heritage.
Beyond the fishing, the annual festival strengthened community bonds, preserved local traditions and showcased Tamil Nadu's rich rural culture, attracting widespread attention from residents and visitors alike.
