Kerala will enforce its annual 52-day trawling ban from midnight on June 9 to midnight on July 31 to protect marine resources and support sustainable fishing practices during the monsoon breeding season. The Fisheries Department said the ban, in force since 1988, helps safeguard fish eggs, juveniles and breeding stock from damage caused by trawling operations.

Traditional fishermen will be permitted to continue surface fishing within Kerala's territorial waters during the ban. The move coincides with the center's 61-day fishing ban in the west coast Exclusive Economic Zone from June 1 to July 31.

To ensure strict enforcement, round-the-clock control rooms have been activated in all coastal districts, while sea patrol and rescue operations will be strengthened with private boats, fisheries ambulances, and FRP boats. Authorities will also provide free ration support to workers affected by the ban. Officials warned that strict legal action will be taken against those violating the restrictions.
