Thrikkakara, a key constituency within the Ernakulam Lok Sabha segment, is witnessing a closely watched three-cornered contest among the United Democratic Front (UDF), Left Democratic Front (LDF), and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections.

The seat has remained a Congress stronghold since its formation in 2008, with the party winning all four elections held so far. The current MLA, Uma Thomas, secured victory in the 2022 by-election following the demise of her husband and sitting MLA, P T Thomas.

The Congress has once again fielded Uma Thomas, overlooking other aspirants. She has expressed confidence not only in retaining the seat but also in the UDF’s overall prospects in the state.

The LDF has nominated CPM leader Pushpa Das, marking a strategic shift as the party has opted to field its own candidate this time instead of backing independents. A first-time candidate, Das has criticised the lack of development in the constituency over the past five years and has promised to bring change if elected.

Adding a new dimension to the contest, NDA ally Twenty20 has fielded Akhil Marar, a Bigg Boss Malayalam winner. Marar, who recently switched from the Congress, is also making his electoral debut, bringing a celebrity edge to the race.

Campaigning in the constituency has intensified, with candidates from both the UDF and NDA actively engaging in door-to-door outreach, community meetings, and visits to churches and other religious institutions.

While a section of voters appears inclined towards change, UDF supporters remain confident that Thrikkakara will continue to stay in the Congress fold.
