Kerala Polls 2026: Tight triangular contest in Nedumangad with LDF seeking to retain seat
A fierce three-way battle is unfolding in Nedumangad, with the LDF banking on development, while the UDF and BJP push local issues ahead of the April 9 Kerala Assembly polls.
A keen three-cornered contest is shaping up in Nedumangad, a key constituency on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram, as the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) looks to retain its hold in the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections.
Part of the Attingal Lok Sabha segment, Nedumangad is a diverse constituency comprising both semi-urban pockets and rural belts. Historically, it has witnessed a see-saw battle between the LDF and the United Democratic Front (UDF) since 1991, though it was once considered a stronghold of the Communist Party of India (CPI).
The seat is currently represented by CPI leader and state minister G. R. Anil, who is seeking re-election. Banking on his track record, Anil has been highlighting infrastructure growth, public asset creation and welfare-oriented development carried out during his tenure.
The LDF campaign in the constituency is centred on its broader narrative of sustained public investment and development, with a focus on improving civic infrastructure and welfare-linked development.
However, the opposition parties are mounting a strong challenge. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded Yuvaraj Gokul, a relatively young candidate, who is focusing on civic issues and alleging a lack of long-term solutions to local problems.
Meanwhile, the UDF has nominated Meenankal Kumar of the Congress, a former CPI member who switched sides. Kumar is campaigning on bread-and-butter issues, including rising prices and the increasing cost of living, seeking to tap into public dissatisfaction.
In the 2021 Assembly elections, the LDF retained Nedumangad with a comfortable margin, reaffirming its strong base in the constituency. However, the constituency’s history of alternating political loyalties suggests that the outcome may not be straightforward this time.
Polling for the 140-member Kerala Assembly will be held on April 9, with counting of votes scheduled for May 4.
