Heavy rain wreaked havoc across India on Saturday as the southwest monsoon intensified over multiple states, triggering widespread flooding, transport disruption and emergency weather alerts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red alerts for Maharashtra, Kerala, Odisha and West Bengal, while coastal warnings and rising water levels affected millions.

Mumbai bore the brunt of the downpour, with severe waterlogging, train delays, falling trees and a building collapse forcing schools and colleges to remain closed. In Palghar, a six-year-old child died after being swept away by floodwaters.

In Kerala, rising river levels, dam water releases and high-wave warnings prompted authorities to urge residents in landslide-prone areas to move to safer locations.

In Odisha, the IMD issued a red warning for very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in five districts — Kandhamal, Boudh, Angul, Sambalpur and Sonepur — after the low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a well-marked system.

As the weather system approached the West Bengal-Odisha coast, the IMD issued a red warning for South 24 Parganas and Purba Medinipur districts in West Bengal.

It also issued an orange alert for Jhargram, Paschim Medinipur and Howrah, urging residents to prepare for severe weather.
