With temperatures soaring across Tamil Nadu, natural water sources inside forests are rapidly drying up, pushing wildlife to search for alternative watering spots. A herd of elephants was recently spotted gathering at the Varattupallam Dam, drawn by the availability of water amid the intense summer heat.

Located near Gobichettipalayam, the dam lies within the forest area under the Tamil Nadu Forest Department’s TN Palayam Forest Range. Several elephants were seen wading into the reservoir, cooling off and quenching their thirst as temperatures continue to climb.

The dense forest surrounding the dam is known to be a habitat for a variety of wildlife, including elephants, leopards, deer and wild bison. With the increased presence of elephants near the dam, forest officials have heightened surveillance in the area.

Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious and avoid venturing too close to the dam. Visitors have also been advised not to disturb the animals or attempt to photograph them.

To help wildlife cope with the harsh summer conditions, the forest department has also begun filling artificial water troughs at several locations inside the forest to ensure animals have access to drinking water during the dry season.
