A rare sighting of the white-naped woodpecker has excited birdwatchers and forest officials in the Sitabani Forest Range, located within the larger Corbett Landscape of Uttarakhand.

A bird photographer recently captured images of a small family of the elusive birds—around three to four individuals—perched together in the forested area. The rare moment quickly drew attention from wildlife enthusiasts and officials of the Uttarakhand Forest Department, who described the sighting as unusual and exciting.

The White-naped Woodpecker (Chrysocolaptes festivus) is a large and striking species known for its distinctive white hindneck, golden-yellow wings, and a prominent, strong bill. Although the bird is found in parts of India, it is rarely seen in groups, making the sighting particularly noteworthy.

Experts say the species is considered a scarce or uncommon breeder in the country, though it is not currently listed as globally threatened. The presence of the birds in the Sitabani area also highlights the rich biodiversity of the forests surrounding Jim Corbett National Park.
