A 377-year-old gateway in Jaisalmer's Sonar Fort stays naturally cool even in 45°C heat, showcasing the brilliance of traditional architecture.

A 377-year-old gateway inside Jaisalmer Fort continues to stay naturally cool despite Rajasthan’s scorching summer heat. Known as Hawa Prol or the “Wind Gate”, the structure uses narrow passageways, sandstone walls and lime plaster to channel and cool desert winds, keeping temperatures noticeably lower than outside.
Built in the 17th century, the gateway showcases the climate-smart design of traditional architecture. Experts say its natural ventilation system remains a powerful example of sustainable cooling at a time when cities are searching for ways to beat rising temperatures without relying heavily on air conditioning.
