Despite an interesting premise and a few engaging twists, the film struggles to deliver the layered legal thriller it promises

Sunny Deol returns to familiar territory with ‘Ikka’, a courtroom drama that mixes legal battles with emotional conflict and old-school heroism.
Directed by Siddharth P Malhotra, the film sets up an interesting moral dilemma and boasts a dependable cast led by Sunny Deol, Akshaye Khanna and Tillotama Shome. While it begins with promise, the film gradually settles into a predictable path, choosing larger-than-life moments over layered storytelling.
Story
Arjun Mehra (Sunny Deol) is one of the country's most respected lawyers, known for his unwavering principles and belief that justice always favours the righteous.
His world is turned upside down when personal circumstances force him to represent Shauryamann Gaur (Akshaye Khanna), a wealthy and arrogant young man accused of attempting to murder Soma Mittal (Akansha Ranjan Kapoor), who was last seen leaving a nightclub with him.
Shauryamann maintains that he is innocent, but the prosecution, led by advocate Madhura Bannerjee (Tillotama Shome), appears to have a convincing case against him. As the trial progresses, Arjun finds himself defending someone he neither trusts nor respects.
A familiar courtroom formula
The film tries to question the simple idea of heroes and villains, which is an interesting starting point. However, instead of fully exploring those grey areas, ‘Ikka’ quickly turns into a classic 1990s-style courtroom entertainer.
From Sunny Deol's grand slow-motion introduction to the dramatic background score and repeated reminders that Arjun is an unbeatable lawyer who always has one final move left, the film embraces a larger-than-life approach throughout.
That style may appeal to viewers who enjoy nostalgic commercial dramas, but it also prevents the story from feeling grounded or genuinely surprising.
Strong premise, limited depth
The biggest issue with Ikka is that it becomes too focused on proving Arjun's brilliance.
Almost every major revelation is designed to reinforce his image as an invincible lawyer, making several twists feel overly convenient. Instead of allowing the mystery to unfold naturally, the screenplay carefully arranges events to keep the hero one step ahead.
As a result, the investigation lacks complexity, and the moral conflict at the heart of the story never reaches its full potential.
Performances
Sunny Deol brings sincerity and authority to Arjun Mehra. His calm confidence makes the character easy to support, even when the writing gives him very little room to surprise the audience.
Akshaye Khanna plays Shauryamann Gaur with confidence, but the performance feels repetitive after a point. Much of his screen presence relies on similar expressions and mannerisms, making the character less engaging than it could have been.
Tillotama Shome is convincing as prosecutor Madhura Bannerjee and brings dignity to the role. Unfortunately, the screenplay does not provide enough material for her courtroom exchanges with Sunny Deol to become the gripping face-offs they could have been.
Dia Mirza delivers warmth as Arjun's wife, while the young actor playing their daughter Samaira adds emotional weight to several scenes. Sanjeeda Shaikh also makes an impression despite limited screen time.
Verdict
Ikka has the ingredients of an engaging courtroom thriller, including an interesting central conflict, experienced actors and a few effective dramatic moments. However, its refusal to move beyond familiar commercial formulas holds it back.
The final twist introduces an intriguing idea but arrives without the emotional or dramatic impact needed to leave a lasting impression. The film's strongest aspect remains its antagonist's practical and transactional view of the world, which offers a refreshing contrast to Arjun's unwavering idealism.
For viewers looking for a nostalgic courtroom entertainer led by Sunny Deol, Ikka offers enough to stay watchable. Those expecting a sharper legal thriller with layered characters may leave wanting more.
