At just 15 years old, British actor Owen Cooper has made Emmy history. On Sunday night in Los Angeles, he became the youngest male winner ever in any acting category, clinching Best Supporting Actor in a Limited/Anthology Series or TV Movie for his breakout performance in Netflix’s Adolescence.

A record broken after 50 years

Cooper’s victory shattered a five-decade-old record. The previous milestone was set in 1973, when Scott Jacoby, then 16, won for That Certain Summer. Accepting his award at the Peacock Theater, a visibly stunned Cooper said:

“Standing up here… wow, this is so surreal. Tonight proves that if you listen, you focus, and step out of your comfort zone, you can achieve anything in life. It may have my name on this award, but it really belongs to the people behind the camera and all the cast.”

Triumph against heavyweights

The teenager triumphed over a formidable field that included Javier Bardem (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story), Peter Sarsgaard (Presumed Innocent), Rob Delaney (Dying for Sex), and his own co-star, Ashley Walters (Adolescence).

Breakthrough with ‘Adolescence’

Cooper gained global recognition playing Jamie Miller, a radicalised teenager who murders a classmate, in the gritty Netflix limited series. Directed with each episode filmed in a single take, the drama also stars Stephen Graham, Christine Tremarco, Erin Doherty, and Ashley Walters.

Adolescence became Netflix’s most-watched U.K. production ever, amassing more than 540 million hours viewed worldwide—second only to Wednesday. Its raw portrayal of how online spaces shape young men sparked widespread debate about the so-called “manosphere.”

Reflecting on his role, Cooper told The Hollywood Reporter: “He could have been more protected. He’s speaking to the wrong people online, which his family has no idea about. Simple things like telling him to get off his phone could have stopped it.”

Improvised brilliance

Some of Cooper’s most memorable lines came unscripted. “When I said, ‘Look at me now!’—that wasn’t in the script. It just came out. Later, I thought, ‘Have I really just said that?’ But it worked, so I used it in every other take.”

Co-star Erin Doherty, who plays a psychologist in the series, praised the authenticity of their dynamic: “There was an element of great realism—we were really pushing each other, even improvising things like yawning in each other’s faces.”

A landmark Emmy night

The 2025 Emmys, hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze, were held at L.A. Live’s Peacock Theater and broadcast live on CBS and Paramount+. While the evening celebrated television’s finest, it was Owen Cooper’s trailblazing win that defined the night—securing his place in Emmy history.
