After the massive success of ‘Obsession’, fans have been wondering whether the horror film will return with another chapter. Actor Michael Johnston, who plays Bear in the supernatural thriller, has now addressed the speculation, saying that a sequel is not currently in the works.

Although he would be happy to revisit the story, Johnston said there are no plans for another film at the moment.

"Look, it's a magical world. Anything can happen. I would love that," he said.

Bear's story may already be complete

Johnston plays Bear, a music store employee whose life changes after he comes across a mysterious toy that grants wishes. Looking back at his character's journey, Johnston joked that audiences may not be too eager to see Bear return.

"I will say, there's no plan for that. Also, I don't know how many people would want Bear back. I think the general consensus is that he kind of got what he deserved," he said.

He even joked about a possible follow-up story in which Bear's parents return to town to investigate what happened, only to end up getting caught in the supernatural mystery themselves.

An anthology could be the future

While a direct sequel is not on the table, Johnston is enthusiastic about another idea from writer-director Curry Barker.

According to the actor, Barker has discussed the possibility of expanding ‘Obsession’ into an anthology, with each instalment telling a completely different story connected by the same supernatural world.

"Curry's idea of having it be an anthology series is really, really cool. All different stories. I'd love to see a wish gone right," Johnston said.

Written, directed and edited by Curry Barker, ‘Obsession’ has become one of the year's biggest independent horror successes.

Released in cinemas on May 15, the film has earned more than USD 400 million worldwide, including over USD 245 million in North America and about USD 157 million from international markets. Made on a reported budget of just USD 750,000 and filmed in only 20 days, the film has far exceeded expectations at the box office.

The story follows a hopeless romantic who uses the mysterious One Wish Willow to make his crush fall in love with him, only to realise that getting exactly what he wished for comes at a terrifying cost.

Michael Johnston on Bear and Nikki's relationship

Johnston also spoke about one of the film's biggest debates among fans: whether Nikki ever truly had feelings for Bear.

He admitted he had not thought much about the question while filming. Later, after discussing the story with co-star Inde Navarrette and Barker, he came to believe that Nikki had shown genuine interest in Bear all along. According to Johnston, she eventually became frustrated because Bear never found the confidence to express his own feelings.

The actor also revealed that the original ending was much darker than the version audiences eventually saw.

In the first version, Nikki dies after a gunshot, and the filmmakers even shot the sequence using practical effects.

"The first thing we did was actually film the gun going off and the blood splatter. It was practical, it was so gruesome, and it was devastating," Johnston recalled.

The team later decided to change direction and keep Nikki alive. Johnston also shared that Navarrette's emotional final scene was completed in a single take.
