The high-profile divorce proceedings between Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor-turned-politician Vijay and his estranged wife Sangeetha Sornalingam have been delayed once again. The Chengalpattu Mahila Court adjourned the matter to August 7, with no major breakthrough emerging from the latest hearing.

Why was the divorce case delayed?

The case came up for hearing on June 15 at the Chengalpattu Mahila Court. However, the proceedings ended without significant progress, leading the court to postpone the matter until August 7.

Reports indicate that the hearing did not result in any settlement or resolution between the two sides, prompting the court to schedule a further hearing at a later date.

Conflicting reports over court appearance

The latest hearing attracted considerable attention after earlier court directions required both Vijay and Sangeetha to appear physically.

Some reports stated that both parties appeared before the court following the summons, while others reported that neither Vijay nor Sangeetha attended the session and were instead represented by their legal counsels.

Regardless, the proceedings concluded without any substantive development, resulting in another adjournment.

Court had rejected virtual appearance request

When the case was previously heard, lawyers representing both sides sought permission for Vijay and Sangeetha to participate virtually, citing security and logistical concerns.

The court rejected those requests and insisted on personal appearances for the June hearing, underscoring the importance of direct participation in the proceedings.

What does Sangeetha's petition allege?

According to reports, Sangeetha's divorce petition includes allegations of adultery, emotional neglect and cruelty.

The filing reportedly claims that she became aware in 2021 of an alleged extramarital relationship involving Vijay, which she says caused emotional distress and damaged marital trust.

The petition further alleges that repeated assurances failed to resolve the situation and that the marriage gradually deteriorated due to emotional distance and lack of communication.

Claims of emotional and financial hardship

The petition also refers to emotional isolation, claiming that Vijay's professional and political commitments increasingly took precedence over family life.

In addition, Sangeetha reportedly raised concerns regarding financial restrictions and other issues which she argues demonstrate an irretrievable breakdown of the marriage.

The divorce petition seeks dissolution of the marriage under provisions of the Special Marriage Act.

A marriage spanning nearly three decades

Vijay and Sangeetha married on August 25, 1999, long before Vijay's rise as one of Tamil cinema's biggest stars and his eventual entry into politics.

The couple have two children — son Jason Sanjay and daughter Dhivya Sasha.

Their separation and ongoing court proceedings have generated widespread public interest due to Vijay's prominence in both Tamil cinema and politics.

The Chengalpattu Mahila Court is now expected to take up the matter again on August 7.

Until then, the case remains under judicial consideration, with no official resolution or settlement announced by either side.
