In India, Jana Nayagan is still awaiting certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC)

New Delhi: Thalapathy Vijay’s upcoming film Jana Nayagan has secured its first censor clearance — but not from India. The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has certified the film with a 15 rating, allowing audiences aged 15 and above to watch it in UK cinemas.
According to reports, including one by Moneycontrol, the BBFC cited strong language, frequent violence, sexual activity and drug misuse as the reasons for awarding the 15 certificate. The development has brought some relief to fans, particularly those in the UK, even as uncertainty continues over the film’s release in India.
Indian censor delay continues
In India, Jana Nayagan is still awaiting certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The delay has cast doubt over the film’s planned 9 January release. The producers have maintained that they have already incorporated dialogue changes suggested by the board, but the certificate has yet to be issued.
Industry sources suggest that certain dialogues have been flagged as sensitive, with concerns that they could hurt religious sentiments, contributing to the prolonged clearance process.
Madras High Court steps in
With time running out, the producers, KVN Productions, have reportedly approached the Madras High Court seeking intervention over the delay. During the hearing, the CBFC informed the court that the film would undergo another review.
A reconstituted committee has been formed to re-examine the film, indicating that a fresh panel will watch it in its entirety. The court has directed the censor board to submit relevant records and provide clear explanations regarding the delay. The matter is expected to come up for further hearing shortly.
Until a decision is taken, the film’s India release schedule remains uncertain.
Overseas release concerns
Beyond India and the UK, there is also uncertainty surrounding the film’s release in other international markets. Unconfirmed reports suggest that Jana Nayagan could face issues with certification in Saudi Arabia. Social media discussions claim the film has not yet received clearance there, with speculation that the makers may need to reapply after making minor cuts or muting certain portions.
At the same time, other reports indicate that the film is slated for release in Saudi Arabia on 9 January at VOX Cinemas, though an official age rating has not yet been announced.
With censor approvals still pending in key markets, the final release plan for Jana Nayagan continues to hang in the balance.
