Chennai: The Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) has announced a series of major policy changes aimed at addressing financial challenges in the Tamil film industry, including the soaring remuneration of top actors, according to various media reports.

At an executive committee meeting held in Egmore, Chennai, the council passed 23 resolutions, one of the most significant being a move to regulate the salaries of leading stars such as Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Vijay, Ajith Kumar, Dhanush, and Sivakarthikeyan. The council said the decision is intended to ease the growing financial strain on producers, as actor fees have escalated sharply in recent years.

According to ‘Nakkheeran’, one of the key resolutions restricts actors from working on OTT web series during the shooting schedule of their films. The TFPC said this measure was necessary to prevent loss of production time and financial setbacks for producers, as several actors have recently taken on projects for streaming platforms. The council also stated that it would withhold support for any actor who takes part in an OTT series during their contracted film period.

Another major reform involves a revamp of the salary structure for leading actors. Instead of receiving large advances or full payments up front, actors will now earn a share of the film’s profits if the project performs well commercially. The TFPC said this model will encourage accountability and link remuneration more closely to a film’s box office success, while reducing financial risks for producers.

The council also passed a resolution urging the Tamil Nadu government to take over the online ticket booking system, which is currently managed by private operators. Producers have raised concerns about a lack of transparency in revenue reporting and believe that bringing ticketing under state control will ensure fairer and more transparent income distribution across the industry.

If implemented, the TFPC’s new regulations are expected to establish greater financial discipline, transparency, and equitable working conditions within Tamil cinema.
