Kochi: Over the weekend, Malayalam cinema’s top two icons, Mammootty and Mohanlal, triggered widespread political speculation with their latest public appearances. While Mammootty attended a grand felicitation for Kerala’s newly appointed Chief Minister, V D Satheesan, in Kochi, Mohanlal concurrently traveled to Paravoor—Satheesan’s hometown near Kochi—to honour the state's new leader at a separate event.

In highly politically conscious Kerala, these simultaneous appearances instantly set tongues wagging.

Traditionally, both industry heavyweights have steered clear of open political endorsements, painstakingly cultivating a neutral public persona. Nevertheless, the public has long harbored strong assumptions regarding their political leanings.

Mammootty's long-standing relationship with the CPM-backed television network has frequently been interpreted as a nod toward the Left. He has served as the channel's chairman and primary face since its launch in the late 1990s. Similarly, Mohanlal enjoyed a warm rapport with the previous Left administration; ahead of the state assembly elections, he conducted a two-day interview with the then-Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, a broadcast that was widely perceived as a massive image booster for the incumbent government.

However, Kerala’s political landscape has undergone a dramatic transformation. The Left Democratic Front, which previously held a commanding 99 seats, collapsed to just 35 seats in the 140-member Assembly. This historic shift has positioned Satheesan as the state's dominant political figure.

Though both actors own properties in Chennai, they are primarily based in Kochi. In the past, Mammootty's name was frequently floated by political insiders as a potential Rajya Sabha nominee for the CPM. That speculation never materialised, and with the Left now holding only 35 MLAs, the prospect seems even more unlikely, given that a minimum of 36 votes is required to secure a Rajya Sabha seat. While it remains unclear whether these appearances by the superstars were merely courtesy calls or strategic political alignments, even the smallest public gestures carry heavy meaning in Kerala. The sight of Mammootty and Mohanlal standing alongside the state's new political epicenter has firmly ignited a fresh wave of debate across both political and cinematic circles.
