Over the past decade, the Netflix phenomenon has woven together monsters, government secrets, Cold War conspiracies and no shortage of teenage turmoil. With the fifth and final season set to debut on 26 November 2025, the series is entering its endgame – one that is expected to loop back to the very beginning, nearly ten years after the show’s young cast first appeared on-screen.
This time, Netflix is rolling out season 5 in volumes: four episodes arriving on 26 November, followed by three more on 25 December, and a feature-length finale landing on 31 December. The conclusion will also receive a limited theatrical release in the United States, allowing audiences to experience the final showdown on the big screen during New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
Returning stars include Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Maya Hawke, and others, alongside new cast members Nell Fisher, Jake Connelly, Alex Breaux and Linda Hamilton.
For viewers struggling to recall where the story left the Upside Down – or how far the characters have come since 2016 – this recap breaks down every major turn from Seasons 1 through 4 ahead of the show's long-awaited return.
SEASON 1
‘Stranger Things’ Season 1 opens in the quiet town of Hawkins, Indiana, where a group of four inseparable friends – Will, Mike, Dustin and Lucas – spend their evenings immersed in Dungeons & Dragons campaigns in Mike Wheeler’s basement. During one such session, Mike introduces the villain of their game, the Demogorgon, a creature they have no idea will soon become terrifyingly real. After the boys head home for curfew, Will Byers encounters something in the dark on his bike ride back. By morning, all that remains is his abandoned bicycle, and his disappearance sends shockwaves through the community.
Eleven appears: While police and volunteers comb the woods for Will, his friends take it upon themselves to search for him too. Instead of Will, they stumble upon a mysterious, shaven-headed girl wearing what appears to be a hospital gown. She has “011” marked on her wrist, so the boys call her Eleven. Mike hides her in his basement, where she reveals a fondness for frozen waffles and an acute fear of the people hunting her. Earlier, Eleven had escaped from a nearby diner run by Benny Hammond, who had taken pity on her and fed her. The agents tracking her killed Benny and staged it as a suicide, prompting Eleven to flee deeper into Hawkins.
Barb vanishes: Mike’s older sister, Nancy, is dating the popular Steve Harrington. One evening at Steve’s house, Nancy brings along her friend Barb. After Barb cuts her hand and sits alone by the pool, something lurking nearby drags her into an alternate dimension later known as the Upside Down. Jonathan Byers, out photographing wildlife in the woods, accidentally captures unsettling images of Nancy at Steve’s house, including a shadowy figure in the background. Steve tears up the photos, but Jonathan and Nancy later piece them back together as they team up to search for Will and investigate Barb’s disappearance. One of the reconstructed photos shows the Demogorgon lurking behind a tree.
Joyce’s lights: Refusing to believe Will is dead, Joyce strings Christmas lights across her living room and paints the alphabet under them so he can communicate from wherever he is. The lights flicker with messages, including “Right here” and a chilling “Run,” moments before the Demogorgon bursts through her wall. Police find a body that resembles Will in the quarry, but Joyce insists it isn’t him. Sheriff Jim Hopper grows suspicious and sneaks into the morgue, discovering the corpse is a fake. His investigation leads him to Hawkins National Laboratory, where he uncovers evidence of secret experiments tied to Will’s disappearance.
Gate to the Upside Down: Nancy and Jonathan find a mutilated rabbit in the woods and then a portal near Steve’s backyard. Nancy slips through to the Upside Down, coming face-to-face with the Demogorgon before narrowly escaping with Jonathan’s help. Meanwhile, Dr Martin Brenner – whom Eleven knows as “Papa” – mobilises his agents to recapture her. Their vans surround the boys until Eleven flips one over with her telekinetic abilities. Over time, she recalls that she encountered the Demogorgon during one of Brenner’s sensory experiments, accidentally creating the tear between dimensions that eventually grew into the gate beneath Hawkins Lab.
Will’s rescue: Using Eleven’s ability to track people across dimensions, the group locates Will. Joyce and Hopper enter the Upside Down through the lab’s gateway and find him barely clinging to life, attached to a parasitic tendril. They cut him free and carry him back. Jonathan, Nancy and Steve set a trap for the Demogorgon at the Byers’ house, managing to injure it. The creature later corners Mike, Dustin and Lucas at Hawkins Middle School, forcing Eleven into a final confrontation. She destroys the Demogorgon but vanishes with it, leaving Mike heartbroken.
A month later, with the holidays approaching, Hopper leaves food – including Eggos – in a hidden forest box, hinting he believes Eleven may still be alive. At home, Will appears healthy, but during a trip to the bathroom, he coughs up a slug-like fragment of the creature that had been inside him, suggesting the Upside Down has not let him go entirely. Season 1 ends with Hawkins forever changed – and far darker secrets still waiting beneath the surface.
SEASON 2
‘Stranger Things’ Season 2 picks up a year after the events of Season 1. Will Byers is back home, but he’s experiencing terrifying visions of the Upside Down – especially of a giant shadowy creature he calls the “Shadow Monster.” Doctors say they are PTSD episodes, but Will soon realises these visions are real warnings of something invading Hawkins.
Eleven returns: Eleven, who disappeared after defeating the Demogorgon, is revealed to be alive and secretly living with Hopper in a cabin in the woods. Hopper keeps her hidden for her safety, but Eleven grows frustrated and begins searching for answers about her past. She later discovers that her real name is Jane and that her mother, Terry Ives, was part of the MKUltra experiments that gave her powers. Hawkins gets two new residents: Max, a tough girl who joins the boys’ friend group, and her stepbrother Billy, whose aggressive behaviour creates tension. Meanwhile, Joyce starts dating Bob Newby, a sweet, nerdy guy who becomes a surprising hero.
Mind Flayer takes over Will: Will’s visions intensify, and soon the Shadow Monster – now known as the Mind Flayer – possesses him. This gives the creature eyes and ears in the human world. Through Will, it begins controlling a growing army of creatures called Demodogs. The tunnels of the Upside Down spread underneath Hawkins, rotting crops and affecting the town. Still grieving Barb’s death, Nancy and Jonathan decide to reveal the truth. They work with conspiracy theorist Murray Bauman, helping expose the lab’s involvement and forcing the government to agree to a controlled narrative clearing Hawkins Lab of blame.
Battle at the lab: Believing she must grow stronger to protect her friends, Eleven goes on a journey to find Kali (Eight), another girl from the lab who can create illusions. Kali helps Eleven confront her trauma but encourages revenge. Realising her true home is in Hawkins, Eleven decides to return. As the Mind Flayer’s control grows, the Demodogs attack Hawkins Lab, trapping everyone inside. Bob heroically helps Joyce, Hopper and Will escape but is killed by a Demodog. Will’s possession worsens, leaving the group desperate to save him.
Final showdown: With Will unable to reveal the Mind Flayer’s plans while possessed, the group heats up the shed to force the monster out of him. At the same time, Joyce, Jonathan and Nancy work to purge the Mind Flayer from Will. Eleven returns just in time for the final battle. She and Hopper head into the lab’s tunnels, where Eleven uses her powers to close the massive gate to the Upside Down while the Demodogs swarm below. Closing the gate severs the Mind Flayer’s connection, saving Will. Hawkins returns to normal, and the kids attend the Snow Ball dance. Mike and Eleven share their first kiss, as do Lucas and Max. But the closing shot reveals the Mind Flayer looming over the school from the Upside Down, showing that the danger is far from over.
SEASON 3
The third season opens far from Hawkins, where a group of Russian scientists attempt to force open a crack into the Upside Down using powerful electromagnetic equipment. When their efforts fail, a subordinate pays with his life. His assistant is warned he has one year to succeed – or meet the same end.
Life in Hawkins takes new turns: Back in Indiana, Mike and Eleven’s growing teenage romance becomes an awkward challenge for her guardian, Chief Jim Hopper, who is struggling with the realities of parenthood as she settles into his cabin. Dustin returns from summer camp with news of a new long-distance girlfriend and builds a massive radio system to reach her. When he accidentally intercepts a mysterious Russian transmission, he brings the recording to Steve Harrington and Robin Buckley, who are working together at Scoops Ahoy in the Starcourt Mall. Meanwhile, Mike, Lucas, Max and Will spend time at the mall as well, until a sudden power outage shuts down the cinema. Joyce Byers also notices unusual disturbances at home – her magnets keep losing their pull, hinting that something strange is underway again.
Uneasy signs: Nancy and Jonathan, now interns at the Hawkins Post, investigate a bizarre rat infestation. Will becomes increasingly convinced the Mind Flayer survived the events of the previous year. Those fears are soon confirmed. At an abandoned steelworks, swarms of rats fuse into a grotesque creature – signalling the Mind Flayer’s return. Billy Hargrove is attacked, dragged inside the mill and possessed. He then ensnares Heather, turning both into servants of the entity. Eleven grows wary of Billy’s odd behaviour, and it soon becomes clear that anyone the creature “flays” becomes a deadly threat.
A Russian secret: With Robin’s help deciphering the intercepted message, Dustin’s group uncovers a hidden Russian base embedded deep within the mall. Steve and Robin are caught spying on the operation, leaving Dustin and Lucas’s sister Erica to rescue them. Elsewhere, the Mind Flayer targets the group at Hopper’s cabin. Eleven wounds the creature but suffers a serious injury – part of the monster embeds itself in her leg and must be cut out.
Fourth of July showdown: Joyce and Hopper, searching for the children at the town’s Fourth of July celebrations, are chased by Russian operatives. Hopper learns through a stolen walkie-talkie that the Russians are closing in on the kids at Starcourt Mall. With Eleven weakened by her injury, the final confrontation begins. Hopper and Joyce push towards the machine designed to reopen the gate, knowing shutting it down would destroy the Mind Flayer. Billy abducts Eleven and prepares to deliver her to the creature, but her friends manage to distract the monster with fireworks. Eleven reaches Billy emotionally, reminding him of childhood memories until he breaks free of the Mind Flayer’s control. Billy then sacrifices himself to protect Eleven and the others.
Hopper’s fate: Hopper faces off against a Terminator-like Russian soldier, a fight that traps him too close to the machine. In a final moment, he signals Joyce to destroy the device. The resulting explosion seals the gate – and seemingly costs Hopper his life. Authorities and Dr Owens arrive as the smoking remains of Starcourt Mall are examined. In the weeks that follow, the government buries the truth about what happened. Eleven, now living with Joyce and without her powers, reads a heartfelt letter Hopper had written for her earlier in the summer. A post-credit sequence reveals a remote Russian prison, where guards feed inmates to a captive Demogorgon – but pointedly spare one prisoner: “the American,” strongly suggesting Hopper is still alive.
SEASON 4
Season 4, the series’ most sprawling chapter to date and the first to be released in two parts, picks up eight months after the Battle of Starcourt. Joyce, Jonathan, Will and Eleven have relocated to California, where Eleven struggles to adjust to school life and to the loss of her powers.
A split story: In Hawkins, Mike, Dustin and Lucas join the Hellfire Club, a Dungeons & Dragons group led by eccentric senior Eddie Munson. Max, meanwhile, remains withdrawn as she mourns her stepbrother Billy. During spring break, Mike travels to California to see Eleven. Around this time, Dr Sam Owens tracks her down, warning that Hawkins faces a grave threat. He insists the only way to save the town is for Eleven to regain her abilities. She agrees to go with him, but soldiers soon descend on her home. Mike, Will and Jonathan escape with help from Argyle, while Eleven is taken to a covert facility in Nevada – where she reunites with the still-living Dr Martin Brenner.
New monster haunts Hawkins: Back in Indiana, cheerleader Chrissy Cunningham becomes tormented by terrifying hallucinations, including the repeated tolling of an unseen grandfather clock. Seeking help, she approaches Eddie to buy drugs, but at his trailer she slips into a trance and is violently killed by a mysterious entity later identified as Vecna. With Eddie fleeing in shock, Chrissy’s boyfriend Jason Carver leads a crusade against him. Vecna strikes again, killing student journalist Fred Benson. Max begins experiencing similar visions and realises she could be next. Nancy and Robin investigate the decades-old case of Victor Creel, who maintains that a supernatural force – not he – slaughtered his family in the 1950s.
Fight to save Max: The group discovers that music can break Vecna’s psychological hold, pulling victims out of his trances. They play Max her favourite song – Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” – allowing her to escape. Lucas reconciles with Max, recognising the depth of her grief. Vecna later kills Jason’s teammate Patrick, prompting Jason to rally the town into believing the Hellfire Club is a demonic cult. Dustin theorises that each murder creates a new portal between Hawkins and the Upside Down, marking every kill site as a gate.
Journeys through the upside down: After investigating a portal beneath Lover’s Lake, Steve, Nancy, Robin and Eddie enter the Upside Down. There, they discover the parallel dimension is frozen in time – permanently pinned to 6 November 1983, the day Will Byers vanished and Eleven first contacted the Demogorgon. In Nevada, Brenner subjects Eleven to isolation exercises designed to unlock buried memories from her time at Hawkins Lab. She remembers befriending an orderly who, like her, possessed telekinetic abilities. He is soon revealed as Subject One – Henry Creel, Victor Creel’s son. As a child, Henry murdered his mother and sister before falling into a coma, crimes his surviving father was blamed for. Brenner later attempted to harness Henry’s powers and replicate them by creating other test subjects, including Eleven. Years later, Henry manipulated a young Eleven into removing a device suppressing his powers, then massacred the lab’s occupants. When he urged her to join him as a partner in reshaping the world, she refused. Eleven pushed him into the Upside Down, where his body twisted into the creature now known as Vecna. Dustin later suggests Vecna serves as a military commander for the Mind Flayer – hough flashbacks show Henry shaping the Mind Flayer’s form out of particles drifting through the Upside Down.
Plan to stop Vecna: As the Hawkins group returns from the Upside Down, Nancy is caught in Vecna’s trance and sees visions of the town destroyed once four major gates converge. The group determines that Vecna’s next kill will complete this plan. They design a risky operation involving Max as bait while others strike Vecna’s lair in the Upside Down. Eleven regains her powers after reliving her memories. Brenner begs her to remain longer, but she rejects him, calling him a monster. The military raids the silo, fatally shooting Brenner as he carries Eleven to safety. Moments later, Mike, Will and Jonathan arrive and take her with them.
Hopper’s ordeal in Russia: Joyce, convinced Hopper is alive, travels with Murray Bauman to Russia. Hopper, who survived Season 3’s blast, has been imprisoned in a gulag housing captured Upside Down creatures. After staging a breakout, Joyce and Murray rescue him. Their long-delayed romance finally moves forward as they reaffirm their promise of a date at Enzo’s and share a kiss.
The final confrontation: The Hawkins group splits for the final offensive. Max confronts Vecna at the Creel house while Lucas stays close to protect her. In the Upside Down, Dustin and Eddie draw swarms of bats away from Vecna’s stronghold with a noisy guitar performance. Eddie is fatally attacked, later dying in Dustin’s arms. In California, Eleven uses a makeshift sensory-deprivation tank to enter Max’s mind and battle Vecna from within. Meanwhile, Hopper, Joyce and Murray break into the Russian prison again to kill the captured creatures, knowing injuring the monsters will weaken Vecna through the shared hive mind. As the fight rages, Vecna begins breaking Max’s limbs. Nancy, Steve and Robin torch and shoot Vecna before he plunges out a window – only for his body to vanish moments later. Max briefly dies, triggering massive ruptures across Hawkins that authorities later describe as a devastating earthquake. Eleven revives her, but Max remains unconscious and gravely injured.
Uncertain futures: Two days later, Mike, Will, Eleven and Jonathan return home to widespread destruction that has left 22 people dead. Eddie is missing and believed responsible for the murders. Max lies in a coma. Hopper’s emotional reunion with Eleven brings a moment of relief, but Will warns that he can still sense Vecna’s presence – and that the villain is weakened, but not defeated. Personal stories also evolve: Will appears to quietly harbour feelings for Mike; Robin grows closer to Vickie; Nancy and Steve revisit old feelings; and Jonathan hides the truth that he no longer plans to attend university with Nancy.
In the final scene, ominous plumes of smoke rise over Hawkins as the Upside Down begins bleeding into the real world – signalling that the battle with Vecna is far from over.
