In 2005, he made his debut as a lead actor in Boyfriend, directed by Vinayan.

Popular Malayalam actor Manikuttan, a familiar face to film lovers, began his acting career as a child artist in the 1999 film Varnachirakukal. However, it was his performance in the television series Kayamkulam Kochunni that truly endeared him to audiences across Kerala.
In 2005, he made his debut as a lead actor in Boyfriend, directed by Vinayan. The film featured a stellar ensemble cast including Lakshmi Gopalaswamy, Honey Rose, Sreenivasan, Mukesh, and Jagadish, among others. In the film, Lakshmi Gopalaswamy portrayed the role of Ramesh's mother — the character played by Manikuttan.
In a recent interview with The Cue Studio, Manikuttan shared a cherished memory involving Lakshmi Gopalaswamy during the making of Boyfriend.
"We're still quite close. Even though she played my mother in the film, I call her Lakshmi — just as she prefers," Manikuttan said. "We met recently on a television show. It was Lakshmi who first introduced me to classical dance during the filming of Boyfriend, specifically for the song 'Panchara Umma Tharam'. Although we had a choreographer on set, it was Lakshmi who actually taught me the dance movements."
He went on to explain that the sequence had to be shot quickly due to the constraints of shooting at a crowded beach location. "Because of the rush, Lakshmi taught me the steps swiftly, and that’s how I learnt the dance. That memory remains one of the best I have of Lakshmi Gopalaswamy," he recalled.
Manikuttan’s heartfelt recollection highlights the enduring camaraderie he shares with Lakshmi Gopalaswamy—built on mutual respect and fond memories. Their bond, formed during Boyfriend, continues to thrive, reflecting the genuine warmth and connection that often blossom through collaborative storytelling.
