Days after sparking criticism online for recreating Rishab Shetty’s intense Daiva Chavundi sequence during an event, Ranveer Singh has issued a public apology via his Instagram Story.

In his note, he wrote: “My intention was to highlight Rishab’s incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it takes to perform that particular scene the way he did, for which he has my utmost admiration.”

He added: “I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition, and belief in our country. If I’ve hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologise.”

The apology follows the controversy that arose after Ranveer, currently promoting his upcoming film Dhurandhar, reproduced the Daiva act on stage during the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on 30 November.

What Happened on Stage at IFFI

In a video that quickly went viral, Ranveer can be heard enthusiastically recalling his experience of watching Kantara Chapter 1 in cinemas. He said: “I watched Kantara in theatres, and Rishab’s performance was outstanding, especially when the female ghost enters your body; that shot was so amazing.”

However, his animated imitation of the Daiva moment drew heavy criticism online, with many social media users accusing him of disrespecting cultural and religious sentiments.

One user posted: “Boycott upcoming Ranveer Singh movie Dhurandhar. He should not make fun of Goddess and Daivasa.”

Another commented: “This is why everyone despises those fools who gained attention before the pandemic and still cling to their fame from Kachrawood. What a foolish person he is.”

A third wrote: “We DON’T want to see Ranveer in the next Kantara movie.”

Ranveer had also asked the audience on stage whether they would like to see him appear in a potential third instalment of Kantara.
