Mark Zuckerberg has apologised for the presence of child sexual abuse material (CSAM), deepfake content and operational errors on Meta's platforms, according to sources familiar with the matter.

ANI sources also said it was conveyed during the proceedings that Meta does not fall within the definition of an intermediary because it determines who receives content on its platforms.

According to the sources, this means the company cannot claim the safe harbour protection available to intermediaries under the Information Technology Act.

The remarks come as scrutiny over social media platforms intensifies over the spread of illegal content, manipulated media and the role of algorithm-driven content distribution.
