Mumbai: After a tense legal battle that stretched for over two years, filmmaker Subhash B has emerged victorious in his copyright clash with Shemaroo Entertainment over the cult classic ‘Disco Dancer’. On August 12, the Bombay High Court ruled in his favour, affirming that the Intellectual Property Rights to the 1982 Mithun Chakraborty starrer have always belonged to him.

“This is my creation,” Subhash told the media. “In 2011, I gave Shemaroo limited video and satellite rights — but the creative and authorial rights to Disco Dancer were always mine. The court has vindicated my stand.”

With the courtroom drama behind him, Subhash is wasting no time in reviving the magic with ‘Disco Dancer 2’, alongside co-producer Nitin Kumar Gupta. Like the original, the sequel will celebrate the world of dance and music, with Subhash revealing his dream casting: “I’d love to have Ranbir Kapoor or Allu Arjun — both are phenomenal dancers and actors.”

The film’s screenplay will be penned by veteran storyteller KV Vijayendra Prasad, known for his blockbuster scripts, who had begun work before the case stalled production. While Subhash may take the director’s chair, he says the final decision will depend on the lead actor.

Co-producer Gupta promises a fresh but faithful follow-up: “The first film told the story of a poor boy accused of theft who challenged a business tycoon. This one will also carry an anti-establishment spirit. We plan to shoot in Russia, where ‘Disco Dancer’ still has a massive fan base, and collaborate with global music icons, including Russian groups, to create electrifying tracks.” The disco floor is officially lit again — and Jimmy’s spirit is ready to dance into a new era.
