His heavy reliance on alcohol during Virata Parvam’s production led to the music director being replaced, only for him to be reinstated after Sai Pallavi’s intervention.

Music director Suresh Bobbili, currently basking in the acclaim for his work on the blockbuster Raju Weds Rambai, has opened up about a deeply personal battle—his struggle with alcohol addiction—and revealed how actor Sai Pallavi played an unexpected yet decisive role in helping him overcome it. In a candid conversation with Gulte, the composer spoke at length about a phase of his life that nearly derailed his career, and how one timely phone call from Pallavi altered everything.
Bobbili explained that his descent into addiction began during the making of Virata Parvam, a project he had initially been excited to work on. As the production progressed, his reliance on alcohol escalated to dangerous levels. He recalls reaching a point where the team, unable to cope with the instability caused by his condition, replaced him midway. Although he was later brought back onto the project, the damage to his self-confidence had already been done.
What he had not expected, however, was the steadfast support of the film’s leading lady, Sai Pallavi. According to Bobbili, Pallavi was one of the few individuals who continued to believe in his craft despite the turmoil he was facing. She insisted that he should remain the music director and encouraged the team to trust that he would deliver. Her confidence, he says, was the first spark that made him reconsider the path he was on.
With the film eventually completed and the final mixing wrapped up, Bobbili thought the chapter had closed. But a phone call from Pallavi shortly afterwards turned out to be the moment of reckoning. Speaking with sincerity and concern, she had urged him to recognise the value of his work and the responsibility that came with his talent. She reminded him that once the film released, it would be his music that audiences would praise first, followed by the technicians’ contributions, and only then the actors. For that reason, she told him, he could not afford to let a destructive habit overshadow his abilities or rob him of the respect he deserved.
Her words, Bobbili says, carried unexpected weight. It was not just the advice itself, but the fact that a highly regarded actor took the time to speak to him not merely as a colleague, but as someone genuinely invested in his future. That compassion prompted him to reflect deeply on the opportunities he had been given—opportunities that many equally gifted musicians were still striving for. He realised that he was in an enviable position, and wasting it would be an act of carelessness he might never recover from.
Determined to reclaim his life and rebuild his career, Bobbili resolved then and there to quit alcohol entirely. But as he recounts, making the decision was far easier than living through its aftermath. The months that followed were excruciating. He described the first three months of withdrawal as “hell”, marked by uncontrollable cravings, physical tremors and moments when he nearly gave in. Yet he persevered, driven partly by Pallavi’s words and partly by the fear of losing the artistic life he cherished.
Slowly, the fog lifted. As his health improved, so did his creativity. The renewed clarity allowed him to channel himself fully into his music, culminating in the success he enjoys today with Raju Weds Rambai. Bobbili now credits his transformation to the turning point created by that single, heartfelt conversation.
Reflecting on his journey, he believes that it was not simply encouragement, but the genuine humanity behind Sai Pallavi’s gesture that set him on the right path. “When someone of her stature believes in you not just as an artist but as a person,” he said, “you begin to believe in yourself again.”
Bobbili’s story stands as a reminder of how a few sincere words—spoken at the right time and with the right intent—can change a life irrevocably. (With inputs from Agencies)
