The makers of Pennu Case have announced that the Malayalam film will release in theatres on January 16, 2026.

The film is directed by debutant Febin Sidharth, who has co-written the screenplay with Reshmi Radhakrishnan. The project is backed by Mukesh R Mehta, Umesh KR Bansal, Rajesh Krishna and CV Sarathi under the banners E4 Experiments, Zee Studios and London Talkies.

Nikhila Vimal plays the lead role of a wedding scammer, a character she has described as a “pan-Indian fraud”. In the film, her character reportedly appears in 13 different bridal avatars while carrying out marriage scams across Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Actor Hakim Shahjahan plays the other lead, with Aju Varghese, Ramesh Pisharody, Irshad Ali, PP Kunhikrishnan and Hari Pathanapuram also featuring in key roles. Additional screenplay and dialogues are credited to Jyothish M, Sunu V and Ganesh Malayath.

Speaking in a recent interview, Nikhila highlighted the challenges actresses face when portraying negative characters. She pointed out that audiences are often more accepting of morally flawed male characters, citing Dileep’s popular thief role in Meesha Madhavan as an example. According to her, similar traits in female characters are judged more harshly, reflecting broader societal attitudes.

The film’s technical crew includes cinematographer Shinoz, music composer Ankit Menon and editor Shameer Muhammed. A teaser for Pennu Case was released earlier, generating interest for its unconventional premise and Nikhila’s transformation-driven performance.

Nikhila Vimal was last seen opposite Unni Mukundan in Get-Set Baby. She is also part of Arya’s Tamil-Malayalam bilingual Ananthan Kaadu, scripted by Murali Gopy and directed by Jiyen Krishnakumar. Earlier this month, she began shooting for Dhoomakethu, directed by Neymar-fame Sudhi Maddison.

With its confirmed January 2026 release date, Pennu Case is positioned as a notable Malayalam release, drawing attention for its female-led narrative centred on crime, deception and social perception.
