The highly-anticipated trailer of director Sabbir Khan’s upcoming horror-thriller flick ‘Adbhut’ was dropped on Saturday. Featuring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Diana Penty, alongside Shrey Dhanwantary and Rohan Mehra, the film will skip the theaters and release on Sony Max in September.

Ahead of the film’s release, let’s take a look at reasons why ‘Adbhut’ doesn’t hit the roof and rather appears to be a film you can totally skip.

A predictable storyline

The trailer shows a young couple, Shrey and Rohan, moving into a new house that is far away from the reach of the city. Soon after they move in, unsettling and unexplanatory things take place. The couple then seeks the help of a detective to uncover the truth. This basic plot of the film is nothing that you have not seen before. Rather, it is a premise that has been used for most horror films. ‘Adbhut’ seems less promising in giving us a fresh story. In fact, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, as a detective, reminds of Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot.

Scenes are heavily borrowed from past films

The trailer shows a scene where the mixer juicer starts running on its own. And when its plug is taken out, it continues to operate. Now, haven’t we seen that before, especially with television sets? Similarly, the scene where Shreya is seen sitting on the edge of the balcony also has somewhat Adah Sharma’s ‘1920’ feel to it. Going by the trailer, it would be no surprise that many of its scenes will remind you of many horror flicks, both Indian and international, that we may have seen in the past.

Jumpscares lack punch, leaving very little to scare

With horror thrillers, the basic expectation of the viewer is to have horror-induced scenes. Unfortunately, with ‘Adbhut’s trailer, you barely feel scared. Though the trailer has shown jumpscare scenes, especially the one where Nawazuddin says, “Agar kuch dikhai nahi deta toh iska matlab yeh nahi ki wo hai nahi. Iska matlab hai ki wahan roshni kam hai," but it leaves no great impact on the audience.

Talented cast, but can they give you the chills?

The makers have got a good set of actors together. Unfortunately, the film doesn’t appear to do justice to the cast. Shreya gets to play a paranormal woman, but none of her scenes in the trailer induce horror. Rohan, who is known for his exceptional work in ‘Bazaar,’ doesn’t seem to offer anything new or exciting in ‘Adbhut.’ And while Nawazuddin has the Kenneth Branagh vibe, only time will tell if his experiment as a detective has paid off or not. All in all, despite roping good actors, ‘Adbhut’ can possibly be a disappointment.
