Babbar Subash’s 1982 iconic film ‘Disco Dancer’ is one of the most loved films of Mithun. In the movie, he played the role of Anil, a street performer who is wrongly accused of stealing a guitar. After facing humiliation, when Anil moves to Goa with his mother, he comes across David Brown (Om Puri), who gives the new identity of Jimmy and makes him rise to stardom. The movie also gave his fans his most iconic dance number of all time, ‘Disco Dancer’, crooned by Bappi Lahiri.
Shankar in ‘Boxer’
Director Raj N Sippy’s 1984 film ‘Boxer’ saw Mithun play the role of Shankar, a thief who later becomes a boxer. He wishes to become a boxer to fulfil his father Dharma’s (Danny Denzongpa) broken dreams and meets his coach Tony Braganza (Parikshit Sahini), who trains him to become a boxing champion. However, he has to leave the sport midway, following an injury. But when his brother’s life is at stake, Shankar returns to boxing with an injured eye.
Ajay in ‘Pyar Jhukta Nahin’
Filmmaker Vijay Sadanah made ‘Pyaar Jhukta Nahin’, inspired by Manmohan Desai’s ‘Aa Gale Lag Ja’. Sadanah cast Mithun and Padmini Kolhapure in the lead as Ajay and Preeti. Ajay is a photographer who hails from a middle-class family and falls in love with a rich girl, Preeti. The financial statuses of their families soon become a hurdle in their love story as Preeti’s father, Bhanu Pratap (Danny), manipulates the couple to create differences between them.
Romeo in ‘Dance Dance’
After the success of ‘Disco Dancer’, Babbar and Mithun collaborated yet again for ‘Dance Dance’. Mithun’s character Romeo and his sister Radha (Smita Patil) were separated from their parents in their childhood, unaware that their father Shyam was killed while their mother was sexually assaulted by a rich man, AM Singh (Amrish Puri). Years later, when Romeo and Radha become popular singers, his sister dies after his husband beats her to death. A dejected Romeo decides to perform again after his new stage partner, Janita (Mandakini), convinces him for it. They then go for a concert in Jalpaiguri, where he comes across his mother and finds out his parents’ truth. Eventually, Romeo takes his revenge from Singh and gets him arrested.
