Matt Damon reveals Christopher Nolan still doesn't own a mobile phone and explains the unique way the Oscar-winning director contacts actors while working.

Christopher Nolan may be one of the most influential filmmakers working today, but his daily habits remain strikingly old-fashioned. While smartphones have become essential in Hollywood, the Oscar-winning director continues to avoid owning one, relying instead on landlines and a carefully coordinated communication system.
Matt Damon, who reunites with Nolan in ‘The Odyssey’, recently offered a glimpse into how the director gets in touch with collaborators. According to the actor, there is a familiar sequence that unfolds whenever Nolan wants to speak to someone, and it begins with a message from the director's wife and producing partner, Emma Thomas.
Emma Thomas sends the warning before Christopher Nolan calls
Speaking to People, Damon explained that Thomas usually alerts actors before Nolan gets in touch.
"You get a text from Emma saying, 'Chris is going to call you.'"
The actor said the call itself comes moments later, but never from a recognisable personal number.
"Then your phone rings from some random Universal number."
Because Nolan does not carry a mobile phone, he typically places calls from whichever line is available at Universal Studios. Damon added that even the filmmaker does not know in advance which number will appear on the recipient's screen.
The unusual routine has become instantly familiar to those who have worked with Nolan over the years, turning an unexpected studio number into a sign that one of Hollywood's biggest directors is calling.
Matt Damon thought Christopher Nolan was just catching up
Damon also recalled how he first realised Nolan wanted him to lead ‘The Odyssey’. The conversation came only a few months after ‘Oppenheimer’ dominated the Academy Awards, prompting the actor to assume the director would take an extended break before beginning another project.
Instead, what started as a casual conversation quickly became something much bigger.
"He called, and we chatted for 10 or 15 minutes."
The timing surprised Damon, who believed Nolan would spend at least a year away from directing after the success of ‘Oppenheimer’.
"It was only six months after 'Oppenheimer' had gone through the Oscars and all of that."
Expecting nothing more than a friendly catch-up, Damon was caught off guard when Nolan revealed his next move.
"So I just thought we were catching up, which we did. And then he blurted out, 'Yeah, I'm thinking of going back to work.' And I went, 'Wait, already?'"
That conversation ultimately led to Damon taking on the role of the legendary Greek king Odysseus.
Christopher Nolan has long avoided texts and emails
Nolan's reluctance to embrace modern communication is not new. In a 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the filmmaker revealed that he does not communicate through text messages or emails, preferring more direct forms of conversation.
His technology-free approach is also reflected on his film sets, where cast and crew have frequently described an environment with minimal distractions and a strong emphasis on staying focused during production.
Over the years, Nolan has suggested that limiting digital interruptions helps him concentrate on filmmaking, allowing him to remain immersed in the creative process rather than constantly responding to notifications.
Christopher Nolan does not write roles for specific actors
Although Nolan frequently reunites with familiar collaborators, he has said he deliberately avoids writing characters with particular performers already in mind.
Explaining his creative process, the director told The Hollywood Reporter:
"What I've found over the years is if you have an actor in mind, and obviously it's very tempting, particularly when we work with great people before, it's tempting to cast it as you are thinking about the script, but for me that always limits what the characters can be. Because then you're writing to what you've seen an actor do before."
Instead, Nolan prefers to fully develop his characters first before deciding who is best suited to portray them.
‘The Odyssey’ marks another Nolan-Damon collaboration
Released in cinemas on July 17, ‘The Odyssey’ is Nolan's latest large-scale epic, adapting the ancient Greek tale of Odysseus' perilous journey home after the Trojan War. The film follows the king of Ithaca as he confronts mythical creatures, divine intervention, deadly curses and the consequences of war during his long voyage home.
The cast includes Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong'o, Elliot Page and John Leguizamo.
