From “₹60 at birth” to gifting her mother a ₹1.6 crore house, comedian Bharti Singh opens up about her mother’s struggles, her near-aborted birth, and her journey to stardom

Mumbai: Comedian and host Bharti Singh, one of the most recognisable faces on Indian television, has opened up about her life’s struggles and humble beginnings in a candid conversation with entrepreneur Raj Shamani on his YouTube channel.
Bharti, now a household name in comedy, revealed that her mother had attempted multiple times to abort her during pregnancy. “Yes, I was the third child. My father worked in a factory, and my mother was a housewife. She had already given birth to two children. Back then, one didn’t realise they were pregnant until 2–3 months later. My mother tried everything — eating papaya, dates, and doing household chores on her knees — so that I would not survive,” Bharti confessed.
Despite her mother’s struggles, Bharti said destiny had other plans. “Par aana hi tha mujhe! Mummy ne khud paida kiya hai mujhe. Raat ko papa duty par the, aur umbilical cord kaatne ke liye dai aayi thi, jisne ₹60 liye the. Main ₹60 mein hui hoon. Aur aaj, maine mummy ko ₹1.60 crore ka ghar gift kiya hai,” she shared with pride.
Born in 1984 in Amritsar, Punjab, Bharti lost her father when she was just two years old. She grew up with her mother, sister, and brother, fighting financial struggles before making her breakthrough with The Great Indian Laughter Challenge. Since then, she has appeared in popular reality shows like Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5, Nach Baliye 8, and has become a familiar face on The Kapil Sharma Show. Most recently, she hosted the cooking-comedy show Laughter Chefs.
From being “a ₹60 child” to gifting her mother a ₹1.6 crore house, Bharti Singh’s story is one of resilience, humour, and triumph.
