Zakir Khan makes history as the first Indian comedian to sell out Madison Square Garden with a Hindi set

New York City: Zakir Khan, one of the biggest names in Indian stand-up comedy, has scripted history by becoming the first-ever Indian comedian to perform a sold-out Hindi comedy show at New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden (MSG).
Known for his relatable humour, heartfelt poetry, and his signature “sakht launda” persona, the Indore-born comedian shared his emotions with fans on Instagram after the milestone moment. “Anjaan desh, paraye logon ke beech itna pyar karne wale log mil gaye, aur kya hi chahiye. Log bahut door-door se drive kar ke aaye the, bahut se log toh 2-3 ghante ki flight se bhi aaye the. Main yeh sab kabhi bhool nahi paunga. It was big for me, for comedy in India, and for our desi culture here,” he wrote.
In his heartfelt note, Zakir expressed gratitude to his fans and friends who made the night unforgettable. “I am still processing… Thode din baad theek se bataunga kaisa laga. Abhi ke liye samajh lo ki it was a big day, not just because of the venue or capacity, but because some of my favourite people were in the audience that day.” Check out the post:
The show also turned into a star-studded celebration of Indian and South Asian artistry. The audience included celebrity chef Vikas Khanna, who recently launched NYC’s acclaimed restaurant Bungalow, American actor-comedian Kal Penn, Indian internet personality Tanmay Bhatt—Zakir’s early mentor—and comedian Hasan Minhaj. Both Minhaj and Bhatt opened the evening before Zakir took the stage. Renowned Pakistani singer Ali Sethi, whom Zakir described as “one of the greatest musicians of all time,” was also present.
Vikas Khanna commemorated the occasion with a heartfelt post, congratulating Zakir for inspiring millions of Indians with his journey.
The night at Madison Square Garden wasn’t just about comedy—it was a cultural moment that marked Indian humour’s global breakthrough.
