Antony Varghese Pepe’s much-awaited Malayalam action thriller Kattalan has finally hit theatres, and early X reviews suggest a mixed but largely engaging response from audiences. While several viewers praised the film’s high-voltage action scenes, Ravi Basrur’s background score and intense first half, others felt the storyline and emotional depth did not fully match the hype around the film.

The biggest talking point online has been the film’s action-heavy presentation and explosive interval sequence. Many users described the first half as “pure fireworks”, with mass moments, powerful visuals and loud theatre reactions driving strong buzz around the release.

One user wrote that Kattalan “goes full throttle right from the opening scene” and praised the “goosebumps BGM” and interval block. Another viewer called it “one of the most engaging action entertainer setups from Mollywood lately”, adding that Ravi Basrur’s music and Antony Varghese’s screen intensity worked “brilliantly together”.

A major section of viewers has highlighted Ravi Basrur’s background score as one of the strongest elements of the film.

Several posts on X praised the visuals, action choreography and extended climax fight sequence, with some calling it a “complete action package”.

Fans also appreciated the surprise cameo appearances in the film. Social media reactions suggest the climax portions and mass sequences are receiving loud responses in theatres, especially among Antony Varghese fans.

Another review described the film as “raw, intense and gripping”, praising its blend of suspense, action and emotional moments. Some viewers also appreciated the film’s technical quality, especially the visuals and sound design.

However, not all reactions were positive. A section of users felt the plot revolving around ivory smuggling and gang rivalry was predictable. Some reviews claimed the narration felt flat in parts despite the strong visuals and music.

A few viewers also compared Kattalan with producer Shareef Muhammed’s previous blockbuster Marco, saying the new film did not reach the same level in terms of action impact and violence. Some users felt Antony Varghese Pepe was “miscast” in certain portions, while others called the film “decent” or “below average”.

Hours before the film’s theatrical release, Antony Varghese shared an emotional note asking fans for their prayers and support. The actor said Kattalan was “incredibly special” because the project was made with close friends and people he considers family.

The actor also recalled the love he received after Angamaly Diaries and said he still wanted to remain “the boy next door” audiences connected with.

Directed by Paul George, Kattalan features Antony Varghese Pepe and Rajisha Vijayan in lead roles. The film also stars Telugu actor Sunil, Dushara Vijayan, Kabir Duhan Singh, Jagadeesh and Siddique in key roles.
