In a significant technological leap, Indian filmmakers are increasingly incorporating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the dubbing process, pushing the boundaries of cinematic storytelling. Indian films are now utilising AI-powered dubbing to enhance audio quality, expand language reach, and streamline production. We take a look at some films that are using AI to create seamless, high-quality dubbing.

Vettaiyan

Rajinikanth’s 170th film, ‘Vettaiyan’, which also stars Amitabh Bachchan, among other notable actors, is the latest Indian film to use AI technology for the dubbing process. Recently, a preview of ‘Vettaiyan’ was used, wherein actor Prakash Raj had dubbed for Amitabh in Tamil. However, the fans weren’t happy with the dubbing, as Prakash’s voice didn’t match with that of the ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ actor. Now, it is being reported that the makers of ‘Vettaiyan’ are using AI’s assistance for Amitabh’s dubbing process.

Padatik

Bengali filmmaker Srijit Mukherji also sought AI’s help for dubbing acclaimed filmmaker Satyajit Ray’s voice. According to reports, the director sought permission from Satyajit’s family to use his voice sample for AI dubbing in his film, titled ‘Padatik’. The film, a tribute to legendary director Mrinal Sen, was released in August. Actor Jeetu Kamal was roped in to play Satyajit’s role.

Martin

Kannada actor Dhruva Sarja will be seen in the upcoming film ‘Martin’, after a hiatus of three years. Directed by AP Arjun and written by Arjun Sarja, ‘Martin’ is an action thriller slated to release on October 11. As per reports, Dhruv has recorded his dialogues in Kannada. However, the makers have used AI to dub his voice in all other 12 languages that the film will be released in, including Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Bengali, Arabic, Russian, English, Korean, and Chinese.

Other significant uses of AI in Indian films

In a groundbreaking fusion of technology and artistry, music maestro AR Rahman sought AI's assistance to recreate the voices of deceased singers Bamba Bakya and Shahul Hameed for a song in Aishwarya Rajinikanth's directorial comeback film, 'Laal Salaam.' This innovative application of AI enabled Rahman to pay tribute to the legendary singers while maintaining the authenticity of their voices. Similarly, the makers of Thalapathy Vijay's 'Greatest of All Time (G.O.A.T.)' leveraged AI to bring late Tamil actor Vijayakanth to life on screen for a special appearance. While AI technology recreated a younger version of Vijayakanth's visual presence, actor Manikandan lent his voice to the iconic actor's character, remarkably doing so pro bono as a gesture of respect.
