Saji Cherian slams CBFC for blocking Suresh Gopi film over ‘Janaki’ character name

Cultural Affairs Minister Saji Cherian on Tuesday criticised the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for withholding screening clearance to the Malayalam film JSK: Janaki vs State of Kerala, starring actor and Union Minister Suresh Gopi. He said the board’s stand was an encroachment on freedom of expression and “completely unacceptable,” asserting that the state government stands firmly with members of the film industry.
“To deny permission to screen a film citing the name of a character is an infringement upon the right to freedom of expression. It is in no way acceptable. If this is the situation faced by a Union Minister and BJP leader who acted in the film, then what will be the plight of an ordinary person?” Cherian asked.
Cherian drew parallels with previous challenges faced by films in Kerala like L2: Empuraan directed by Prithviraj. “That film was chopped in several parts. There were threats, allegations of financial wrongdoing, and even house raids. There was a deliberate attempt to tarnish the film. But the people of Kerala embraced it (Prithviraj film),” he added.
He further said, “Our Constitution provides democratic rights to people, including the right to choose films, literature, music, and even food. Interfering in this is unacceptable under any circumstances. The government will extend full support. We are entirely with those working in the film sector and are committed to creating an atmosphere where they can work freely.”
Kerala High Court raises questions
On Monday, the Kerala High Court questioned the CBFC’s insistence on removing the name “Janaki” from the film’s title, saying the justification appeared "prima facie unsustainable."
"How is it contemptuous to any racial, religious, or other group? Why cannot the name be used? The case cannot be indefinitely adjourned," the court asked, noting that Janaki is not an accused but a victim and central character fighting for justice. "Are you dictating the filmmakers...," it said during the hearing of a plea filed by the production company Cosmos Entertainments.
The court also responded to the CBFC Revising Committee’s direction that the name 'Janaki' should be changed as a condition for granting certification. The board had reportedly objected on the grounds that 'Janaki', an alternative name for Goddess Sita, was unsuitable for the character.
The judge countered, “There are names like Ahmed, Raman, Krishnan—all based on religious identities. How is 'Janaki' different? What makes this name offensive?”
“Has anyone complained about the name Janaki? Whose sentiments are being hurt? Has anyone actually raised an objection?” the court asked, noting that the teaser had already been released three months ago without issue.
The court directed the CBFC to provide a specific explanation on its objection. “You must answer clearly why the name Janaki cannot be used,” it said, adding that the legal process cannot be delayed indefinitely. The case is set to be heard again on Wednesday.
Justice Nagaresh observed that naming a rape survivor character Janaki carried symbolic value. He also questioned whether the CBFC had the authority to dictate character names in creative work.
The film, directed by Pravin Narayanan and also starring Anupama Parameswaran, reportedly follows the legal fight of a woman named Janaki against the state.
