Parvathy Thiruvothu has said that the Malayalam film industry did not turn against her or ostracise her for the stand she has taken over the years. She also said she considers herself fortunate to have started her career in Malayalam cinema, where she found the space to speak about her views and received support from the media.

‘I am lucky to have started my career in Malayalam’

Speaking to Mathrubhumi ahead of the release of her upcoming film ‘Pradhama Dhrishtya Kuttakkar’, Parvathy said her experience in Malayalam cinema made her realise that actors in some other industries may not have the same freedom to express their opinions.

“I am fortunate to have taken my first steps in the Malayalam film industry. Here, I have the space to speak about my views, and there is media that supports those conversations. I was shocked to realise that this is not the case in many other industries. You cannot express the same way in Telugu cinema.”

She said that even as a newcomer, she was able to openly talk about her personal philosophy and identify herself as a feminist without facing severe consequences within the industry.

“As someone who was new to the industry, I had the freedom to talk about my philosophy. Even when I presented myself openly as a feminist, I did not face opposition for it. People may have said that ‘Parvathy speaks too much’, but the industry did not hate me or ostracise me because of my views. That is a great privilege.”

‘My importance was never decided by what I wore’

Parvathy also reflected on how she presented herself during the early years of her career. She recalled attending interviews in simple clothes and without make-up, yet never feeling that her value as an actor was judged by her appearance.

“Back then, I would sometimes come to interviews wearing my father’s shirt. I would wear glasses instead of contact lenses and come without make-up. Even then, my importance was never decided by what I was wearing. I understand the value of that much more clearly now.”

As for ‘Pradhama Drishtya Kuttakkar’, Parvathy Thiruvothu plays a police officer in the investigative thriller, marking her first police role in a career spanning two decades. Directed by Shahad and written by P.S. Subramanyan and Vijesh Thottungal, the film also stars Parthipan, Mathew Thomas, Vinay Forrt, Siddharth Bharathan, Unnimaya, Azees Nedumangad and Jayashree Sivadas.
