Disney+ and Hulu have created a record-breaking, nearly life-size gingerbread replica of the ‘Home Alone’ McCallister house in Los Angeles.

Disney+ and Hulu have constructed an elaborate, nearly life-size gingerbread replica of the McCallister home from ‘Home Alone’, marking the 35th anniversary of the holiday classic – and earning a new Guinness World Record in the process.
The installation, positioned at the busy intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street, was officially recognised this week as the Largest Gingerbread House by Guinness World Records judge Brittany Dunn. The structure, which visitors can view through Friday night, towers over the pavement and has become a seasonal attraction in central Los Angeles.
Created as a festive marketing centrepiece and built entirely from edible materials – from flour and eggs to fondant and edible adhesive – the gingerbread build serves as a tribute to a film that continues to dominate holiday viewing lists.
A colossal culinary project
Standing 25.6 feet high, 42 feet across and stretching 58 feet in length, the structure accounts for 44,838 cubic feet of gingerbread architecture. Local reports note the use of a staggering 5,700 pounds of flour and more than 4,200 eggs, formed into 4,400 decorative brick tiles and 800 roof tiles. Roughly 20 gallons of edible glue and 20 pounds of fondant were required to hold the installation together.
Although spectators are asked not to take a bite, they are welcome to walk around the display and admire the craftsmanship. Guests have also been encouraged to bring unwrapped toys in support of the Toys for Tots campaign attached to the event.
A record-breaking moment
Dunn certified the achievement on Friday morning – the final scheduled day of public access. A framed Guinness World Records certificate has been placed in front of the installation. Weather permitting, the display may remain in place for one more night.
The previous record was set in Texas in 2013 by the Traditions Club, which erected a gingerbread house measuring 60 feet long, 42 feet wide and just over 10 feet tall.
Honouring three decades of a holiday staple
Los Angeles has been leaning into nostalgia as ‘Home Alone’ turns 35. Screenings and community events have cropped up across the city, including a special showing hosted by the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, which brought together star Macaulay Culkin and director Chris Columbus for a discussion.
The film’s legacy remains full of lore: the screenplay was completed in nine days, several actors improvised key lines and Joe Pesci famously invented a faux-swearing language to avoid cursing at young Culkin. Although the gingerbread tribute stands in California, the real McCallister home is located in Illinois, with interior scenes shot inside a local high school.
Produced by John Hughes and directed by Chris Columbus, the 1990 release catapulted Culkin to global fame and earned him a Golden Globe nomination. ‘Home Alone’ remains a fixture in annual holiday programming – and the full franchise is currently available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu.
