Payal Kapadia's critically acclaimed All We Imagine As Light, representing India, missed out on the prestigious Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language. The award went to Emilia Pérez, which was the favourite to win, dominating the nominations with 10 nods.
Despite All We Imagine As Light being a favourite in the global awards circuit, it faced stiff competition from notable films like The Girl With the Needle, I’m Still Here, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, and Vermiglio. The Indian film, which also earned a nomination for Best Director (Motion Picture), had been highly praised worldwide but ultimately could not secure the win.
Emilia Perez, which also won Zoe Saldana a Best Supporting Actress Globe, follows four remarkable women in Mexico, each pursuing their own happiness. Cartel leader Emilia enlists Rita, an unappreciated lawyer, to help fake her death so that she can finally live authentically as her true self.
Kapadia's film revolves around two Malayali nurses in Mumbai and their friendships. The film created history by becoming the first from India to win the Grand Prix at the Cannes in May last year. The film is also nominated in multiple categories at the BAFTAs.
While this is a setback for Indian cinema, the recognition of All We Imagine As Light at such a prestigious event has sparked pride and excitement in the Indian film community, showcasing the growing influence of Indian filmmakers on the global stage. The Golden Globe Awards are live in India on Monday on Lionsgate Play.
