Thiruvananthapuram: Members of the BJP core committee have criticised the RSS nominees on the screening committee of the film Empuraan, citing lapses. Among the four members in the screening committee was G.M. Mahesh, General Secretary of Tapasya, the cultural wing of the BJP.

When the issue was brought up for discussion, the core committee's position was that the BJP should not engage in any campaigns against Empuraan. Meanwhile, BJP State President Rajeev Chandrasekhar clarified in the core committee meeting that his Facebook post was not an endorsement of the film’s content, but rather, he was simply wishing success to Empuraan, and that he would watch the movie soon.

A question arose in the core committee regarding whether there had been any objections when the film was submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). K. Surendran, a senior BJP leader, explained that the tenure of BJP members on the CBFC had expired in November, and the BJP nominees were no longer on the board.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar further indicated that organisational action would be taken for the oversight.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar had earlier posted on Facebook wishing the team of Empuraan, including actors Mohanlal and Prithviraj, well, and expressed his intent to watch the movie soon. This was followed by cyber-attacks against the film, with Chandrasekhar clarifying on Friday that Mohanlal is a close friend and that the wishes were simply to extend congratulations. He made it clear that his post did not signify support for the movie's content.

J. Nandakumar, a senior RSS leader in Kerala, sharply criticised the film through Facebook. Meanwhile, veteran regional leader of the party, M.T. Ramesh, asserted that films should be viewed as films, and there was no need to see them in any other light. He also stated that there was no need to engage in actions like boycotting the film.

This reaction came in the wake of growing criticism that Empuraan contained opinions that were against right-wing organisations.

Meanwhile, a cyber-war has erupted between left-wing and right-wing supporters, with both sides launching attacks on social media in connection with the film’s content.
