Renowned Malayalam actor Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran's new film Empuraan has garnered significant attention. Social commentator Rahul Easwar has delivered a glowing review for the big-ticket movie. After watching the film at the Mumbai INOX, Easwar took to YouTube to share his thoughts, calling the movie "magnificent" and urging everyone to watch it.
In his YouTube review vlog, he stated that if there were an Oscar for courage, then Empuraan truly deserves it. Easwar opened up about the film, praising its grandeur and compelling performances. He noted that while the film had both strengths and areas that could have been improved, the overall experience was one to behold.
"Empuraan is a magnificent movie," Easwar said. "There are some shortcomings, but a lot of positives as well. Mohanlal's performance is grand, and Prithviraj has done an excellent job."
Easwar also discussed the film’s political undercurrent, pointing out that Prithviraj, known for his bold stance, openly communicates his political views through the film. According to Easwar, the film's portrayal of political issues is sharper and more direct than in the first part, Lucifer, where Prithviraj balanced the jibes at Congress, Communists, and the BJP. In Empuraan, however, the narrative is clearly critical of the BJP, with references to controversial events like the Gujarat riots.
"The film boldly reflects Prithviraj's political views," Easwar stated. "Prithviraj, unlike in Lucifer, does not hide his stance. In this film he explicitly criticizes the BJP, even using terms like Bajrangi to refer to the main antagonist."
Easwar also highlighted the film's Hollywood-style presentation, with a balanced narrative and powerful performances from the entire cast. "The movie has a Hollywood vibe to it," he said. "The performance by everyone is delightful, especially Mohanlal, who brings a unique Hollywood-style aura to his character. Overall, the film has been put together well, and I believe it will undoubtedly find favour with a large section of Malayalam viewers."
However, Easwar acknowledged that the film's political themes might not sit well with all audiences. He anticipates that those with opposing political views might criticize it, especially because the film takes a direct swipe at the BJP. Despite this, Easwar lauded the courage of the filmmakers, mentioning that Mohanlal, Prithviraj, and Murali Gopy (son of the legendary Bharat Gopy) have displayed immense bravery in addressing such politically charged issues.
"Movies like Empuraan make a bold statement," he said. "The courage shown by Mohanlal, Prithviraj, and Murali Gopy in openly discussing issues like the misuse of national investigative agencies is extraordinary. It’s a film that demands attention and will undoubtedly become one of the greatest films in Malayalam cinema."
Easwar concluded his review by reaffirming that Empuraan will be remembered as a milestone in Malayalam cinema, saying, “There’s no doubt in my mind that Empuraan will be regarded as one of the biggest films in the history of Malayalam cinema."
