Aditya Dhar’s ‘Dhurandhar’ has finally reached cinemas after a turbulent journey marked by uneven advance sales and fluctuating audience sentiment. The spy thriller, set in Pakistan in the early 2000s and inspired by true events, stars Ranveer Singh as an Indian operative working to dismantle the Lyari gangs. The film also features Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal and R Madhavan.

Advance bookings were erratic, with an encouraging start soon slowing before gathering pace again as release day drew nearer.

That stop-start pattern continued on Friday, December 5, when the film opened across 5,000 screens nationwide. With advance bookings amounting to just over ₹9 crore, ‘Dhurandhar’ needed robust walk-ins to hit a respectable opening figure.

As positive reviews and audience reactions spread on social media, footfall surged. Afternoon occupancy climbed past 33%, setting the film on course for a strong finish to the day.

Latest reports indicate that the film has collected ₹27 crores in India on its first day, far exceeding industry expectations of ₹15–18 crore.

On its second day, the thriller has earned around ₹5.57 crores across languages in Indian theatres, according to Sacnilk.

Biggest opening day in Ranveer’s career

‘Dhurandhar’ now stands as Ranveer Singh’s biggest opening day yet, surpassing ‘Padmaavat’ (₹24 crore), ‘83’ (₹12.64 crore), ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ (₹11.10 crore), ‘Simmba’ (₹20.72 crore), and even the 2025 hits ‘Saiyaara’ (₹21.50 crore) and ‘Sikandar’ (₹26 crore), as per media reports. The only recent release ahead of it remains Vicky Kaushal’s ‘Chhaava’ (₹31 crore).

The performance also compares favourably with past blockbusters. ‘Padmaavat’ began at ₹19 crore before reaching ₹585 crore worldwide, ‘Simmba’ opened with ₹20.72 crore and finished at ₹390 crore globally, while ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ grew from an ₹11.10 crore debut to a worldwide total of ₹357.5 crore.

Following the film’s release, Ranveer’s wife, actor Deepika Padukone, took to Instagram to praise his performance.

She posted, “Dhurandhar has been watched, and it is worth every minute of those 3.34 hours. So do yourselves a favour and get to a cinema hall NOW! So incredibly proud of you, @ranveersingh. Congratulations to the entire cast and crew.”

Shot across Thailand, Mumbai, Punjab and Ladakh between July 2024 and October 2025, ‘Dhurandhar’ runs for 214 minutes, placing it among the longest mainstream releases in Indian cinema.

Producers have already confirmed a sequel: ‘Dhurandhar 2’ is scheduled for release on March 19, 2026, and is set to clash at the box office with Yash’s upcoming action film ‘Toxic’.
