Denis Villeneuve, director of `Dune`, will helm the next James Bond movie, marking a new era for the franchise under Amazon MGM Studios.

New York: Denis Villeneuve, the visionary filmmaker behind the ‘Dune’ saga, is set to direct the next instalment in the James Bond series, marking a new era for the iconic franchise under Amazon MGM Studios.
The announcement came Wednesday, confirming that Villeneuve will lead the yet-untitled Bond film—the first since Amazon MGM assumed creative control of the series earlier this year. This shift comes after decades of stewardship by the Broccoli family, who had long maintained a tight grip on every creative decision in the 007 universe.
Villeneuve, 57, said some of his earliest memories of going to the cinema were tied to the James Bond franchise, recalling how he grew up watching the films with his father, starting with ‘Dr. No’ starring Sean Connery.
He expressed deep reverence for the Bond legacy, calling the character and the series “sacred territory.”
“I’m a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he’s sacred territory,” Villeneuve said in a statement. “I intend to honour the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honour.”
Producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman, who are attached to the project, had previously stated that they would secure a screenplay and a director before moving on to casting a new Bond. In Villeneuve, they’ve secured one of the most acclaimed directors working today—fresh off two highly praised ‘Dune’ films that collectively grossed over $1 billion globally and earned 15 Oscar nominations, winning seven.
The French Canadian filmmaker also boasts an impressive résumé that includes ‘Blade Runner 2049,’ ‘Arrival,’ ‘Sicario,’ ‘Prisoners,’ ‘Enemy’ and ‘Incendies.’
With Villeneuve now on board, Amazon MGM appears to be accelerating development of the next chapter in the spy saga. Since gaining creative oversight in February, the studio has moved quickly, likely in a bid to assure long-time fans who remain wary of new corporate stewardship and potential over-commercialisation of the franchise.
“James Bond is in the hands of one of today’s greatest filmmakers,” said Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios.
Villeneuve reportedly triumphed over a shortlist of high-profile contenders that included Edward Berger (‘Conclave’), Paul King (‘Paddington 2’), Edgar Wright (‘Baby Driver’) and Jonathan Nolan, co-creator of ‘Westworld’ and brother of Christopher Nolan.
“Denis Villeneuve has been in love with James Bond movies since he was a little boy,” said producers Pascal and Heyman. “It was always his dream to make this movie, and now it’s ours, too.”
Though no official release date has been revealed, Villeneuve is set to begin filming the third ‘Dune’ movie this summer. If Bond production follows in 2026, a 2027 theatrical release is considered likely.
Amazon purchased MGM Studios for $8.5 billion in 2022, but only gained full creative rights to the Bond franchise earlier this year. Until now, all Bond directors were handpicked by the Broccoli family—a tradition now evolving as Amazon MGM steps into the driver’s seat.
