Apart from Kamal Haasan, the much-anticipated Mani Ratnam directorial features an ensemble cast, including Joju George, Silambarasan, and Trisha Krishnan

Thug Life is set to release in theatres across the globe on June 5. The film marks the long-awaited collaboration of two mavericks of Indian cinema — Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam after a long gap.
Apart from Kamal Haasan, the much-anticipated Mani Ratnam directorial features an ensemble cast, including Joju George, Silambarasan, and Trisha Krishnan.
Just days before the release, the film became embroiled in controversy following Kamal Haasan’s remarks about the Kannada language, which sparked widespread protests in the southern state. Haasan’s refusal to apologise for his statement has led to a boycott threat against Thug Life in Karnataka.
Amid the controversy, what has now caught the attention of cinephiles is Kamal Haasan’s heartfelt birthday message to his longtime collaborator Mani Ratnam, who turns 60 on Tuesday.
Taking to X, Kamal Haasan wrote:
“Happy Birthday, Mani Ratnam.
From Nayakan to Thug Life, we’ve journeyed through time together — as colleagues, family, co-dreamers, and above all, as lifelong students of cinema.
Through every chapter, your presence has been a source of strength — a mind I turn to in moments of doubt, and a soul deeply attuned to the language of film like few others.
May your stories keep unfolding, for with every frame, your vision brings depth, beauty, and meaning to cinema.
Forever your friend,
Kamal Haasan.”
With Thug Life just hours away from release, expectations are sky-high. Fans are eagerly awaiting a cinematic masterpiece — a testament to the unmatched versatility and command of both the director and the actor over their craft.
