Kochi: After weeks of uncertainty and legal tussles, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has finally approved the release of the much-awaited Suresh Gopi-starrer Janaki V vs State of Kerala. The film is now scheduled to hit theatres on July 18.

Earlier this week, the filmmakers agreed to the CBFC’s demands to change the film’s title from Janaki to either V Janaki or Janaki V to address concerns over religious sensitivity. The original title had been objected to by the board, as “Janaki” is also an alternative name for the Hindu goddess Sita. The CBFC also asked for the muting of the name in one courtroom scene.

The producers filed a plea in the Kerala High Court challenging the board’s refusal to certify the film unless the title was changed. During a hearing on Wednesday, the filmmakers agreed to comply with the board’s requirements to secure clearance.

Justice N Nagaresh adjourned the case to next Wednesday but confirmed that certification would be granted within three days of the film’s resubmission with the requested changes.

The film, directed by Pravin Narayanan and also starring Anupama Parameswaran, portrays a woman's legal struggle for justice after assault.

The production company, Cosmos Entertainments, approached the court after delays in certification impacted the film's release schedule.
